Poets in the World: Visioning & Skills-Building
What is the power of poetry?
How can poets claim this power?
What skills do we need to use and grow this power?

These are questions at the center of my—Carolyn Cushing's—term as Poet Laureate of Easthampton, MA from 2023-2025. I'd like to explore this with fellow poets. This survey is a first step. Perhaps it will lead to a series (in-person in Western Mass, virtual, and/or hybrid) or perhaps another form will emerge. As you will see my first musings were very alliterative; all our skills and visioning begin with P :) The are:
  • Power
  • Purpose
  • Practice
  • Public
  • Partners
  • Privilege
  • Platform
  • Performance
  • Publication
  • Pay
  • Persistence
  • Play
I am intentionally not including topics on craft and form as well as these topics are well covered by others.

Respond to as many or as few topics as you like. No need to do them all. You can jump around. No required answers.

Privilege - At least two prongs to this topic: 1.) how the poet’s social identity confers privilege, denies privilege, and creates insights and blinders; and 2.) how creating poetry is a privilege and a gift and how we can use our roles to create space for more people to create and share poetry.

I identify as ... (you are invited to share aspects of your social identity here). As this is not a formal/scientific survey, I thought I could skip having to put ourselves into check boxes, but I do want to know if I meet my aim of hearing from a diverse group of poets.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your ideas and wisdom! Anything final to share?
