Microsoft: Don't leave millions of computers behind

On Oct. 14, Microsoft plans to end ongoing free support for Windows 10. The company has also made the decision to strictly limit which computers can upgrade to Windows 11, meaning that there are as many as 400 million computers which can’t upgrade, and won’t be getting security or other updates. This decision could trigger the biggest surge in obsolete computers ever -- with dire consequences for both consumers and the environment.

Think Microsoft should continue to provide automatic updates? Sign on the letter below, championed by Right to Repair advocates around the world (PIRG, Repair.eu, Repair.org, iFixit and many others). We're looking for organizations and businesses who support extended support:

Dear Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft,

The end of free Windows 10 support will cause widespread damage to the environment and cybersecurity. About 40% of PCs currently in use can’t upgrade to Windows 11, which equals hundreds of millions of devices. When Microsoft stops providing security updates for Windows 10, most of these computers will either be vulnerable to cyber attacks or enter the overburdened and toxic electronic waste stream.

Microsoft has made laudable commitments around cutting waste and climate pollution -- but these goals will be undermined if the company chooses to abandon hundreds of millions of computers, causing a surge in e-waste.

Offering extended security updates for a price or bundling security updates into other services isn’t going to fix this widespread problem. We urge you to extend free, automatic support for Windows 10.

Sincerely,
