Generally, adult hawks aren’t too difficult to identify. Wing pattern, color, and shape usually make adults distinct from other species of hawk. Young hawks on the other hand, can pose a challenge. Brown, streaky, and with indistinct facial patterns, young hawks can appear very similar to each other. Body shape is often the best way to begin the id process. But also look at tail length, tail pattern, wing pattern, and breast streaking (or lack of) to help identify these young birds.
