¿What is the Volunteer Programme?

Our Volunteer program is designed for individuals eager to contribute to the daily operations of our cultural exchange centre. Volunteers take on hands-on tasks such as:
  • Cooking – Assisting with meal preparation
  • Cleaning – Helping maintain a clean and organised space
  • Manual Work & Gardening – Supporting infrastructure, gardening, and general maintenance

⚠️ Skill-level is less important than a great attitude and strong work-ethic in support of El Terreno’s internal operations, in exchange for accommodation, meals and an authentic experience in the Ecuadorian Andes. This program does not involve direct engagement with the local community.

Nuestro programa de voluntariado está diseñado para personas deseosas de contribuir al funcionamiento diario de nuestro centro de intercambio cultural. Los voluntarios se encargan de tareas prácticas como:

  • Cocinar - Ayudar a preparar las comidas
  • Limpieza - Ayudar a mantener un espacio limpio y organizado
  • Trabajo manual y jardinería - Apoyo en infraestructura, jardinería y mantenimiento general

⚠️ El nivel de habilidad es menos importante que una gran actitud y una fuerte ética de trabajo en apoyo de las operaciones internas de El Terreno, a cambio de alojamiento, comidas y una experiencia auténtica en los Andes ecuatorianos. OUTLINE

For 25-35 hours a week (Mon-Friday), depending on the option you choose, you'll dedicate your time to El Terreno activities. This programme requires a minimum commitment of 2 weeks to ensure a meaningful impact and allow you to fully immerse yourself in the experience. We offer two flexible options to suit your availability:
  • Option 1: Work 5 hours per day (25 hours per week) with a $25 weekly contribution to help cover accommodation and utilities.
  • Option 2: Work 7 hours per day (35 hours per week) with no financial contribution required.
Whether you choose to work fewer hours with a small contribution or longer hours at no cost, this programme provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture, connect with a vibrant community, and contribute to meaningful socio-environmental projects in the beautiful Andes of Ecuador.

ACTIVITIES

Regular Activities (Mon - Fri):
  • 8am: Check in with all interns & volunteers
  • 8.30am: Cleaning, labouring, gardening
  • 10am: Cooking lunch
  • 12:30pm: Eat lunch
  • 1pm: Washing up
  • 2-4pm: Afternoon Activities
Weekly Activities:
  • Mon 2-4pm: Family meeting & deep clean
  • Tue 7-10pm: Local trivia night / language exchange in Guaranda (optional)
  • Wed 7-9pm: Shared meal & cultural night from other participant (optional)
FOOD

We will provide you with lunch Monday to Friday
For your other meal you have a kitchen with a cooker, fridge, blender and coffee machine etc.
There is a corner shop in the village with basics (rice, oil, sugar etc.)
10 minutes by bus you reach the nearest town with dried food & vegetables
30 minutes by bus you arrive in Guaranda with supermarkets and the large weekly market

ACCOMMODATION

We have two options:

1. The Quilico Dormitories:
- Shared dorms (4 people max where possible)
- Bathroom with hot water
- 20MBs WiFi
- Free hand-washing station or paid washing service available

2. Family Homestay:

- Practice your Spanish, get to know local culture and enjoy some privacy
- Private room
- Shared bathroom and kitchen with host family
- WiFi included
- Washing station (by hand or washing machine depending on the house)
- Still with access to kitchen, bathroom, living and WiFi room of the Quilico Dormitories (a few minutes walk away)
- $20-25/week (individual) or $35-40/week (couple)

ADDITIONAL TIME-OFF

If you would like time off / to engage in intern activities, they can be ‘purchased’:
  • Accommodation: $10 per night
  • Meals: $4 per lunch
  • Activities: $16 per activity (plus expenses)

SICK DAYS

Volunteers can take up to 1 sick day every 2 weeks at no extra cost. Beyond that, we ask for a contribution of $10/night for accommodation and $4/lunch to help cover basic expenses. Please notify your coordinator if you’re unwell or unable to join activities:


ECUADOR LIVING COSTS

$20-25/week on personal food etc.
$2-3.50 for a set lunch in a restaurant
$1.25 per hour of bus travel
$10-20 per night for a hostal

LOCAL SECURITY

Guaranda is one of the safest places in Ecuador
There is a police station in the village
Nobody has been robbed or assaulted since the inception of the project in 2021
But we recommend that you don't walk around at night or leave anything unattended

ARRIVAL

Guaranda is equal distance between the two international airports, Quito and Guayaquil
Bus travel is cheap and generally safe, $7 for a 5 hour journey
We can also arrange an airport transfer
Acuerdo e Información Sobre el Voluntariado
Durante 25-35 horas a la semana (de lunes a viernes), dependiendo de la opción que elijas, dedicarás tu tiempo a las actividades de El Terreno.  Este programa requiere un compromiso mínimo de 12 semanas para garantizar un impacto significativo y permitirle sumergirse plenamente en la experiencia. Ofrecemos dos opciones flexibles que se adaptan a tu disponibilidad:

Opción 1: Trabaja 5 horas al día (25 horas a la semana) con una contribución semanal de 25 $ para ayudar a cubrir el alojamiento y los servicios públicos.
Opción 2: Trabajar 7 horas al día (35 horas semanales) sin contribución económica.
Ya sea que elijas trabajar menos horas con una pequeña contribución o más horas sin costo alguno, este programa ofrece una oportunidad única para sumergirte en la cultura local, conectar con una comunidad vibrante y contribuir a proyectos socio-ambientales significativos en los hermosos Andes de Ecuador.

ACUERDO DE TRABAJO

Actividades Regulares (lunes - viernes):

- 8am: Check con otros voluntarios y pasantes
- 8.30am: Limpieza, trabajo manual, huerta
- 10am: Cocina almuerzo
- 12:30pm: Comer almuerzo
- 1pm: Lavar platos

- Martes 3pm: Clases de Inglés para la Comunidad (opcional)
- Martes 7pm: Intercambio de idioma en Guaranda (opcional)

COMIDA

Proveemos almuerzo por los días de Trabajo (lunes a viernes)
Para otras comidas tendrás una cocina, refrí, licuadora y cafetera
Hay una tienda en el pueblo con lo básico (arroz, aceite, azúcar etc.)
10 minutos en bus llega al pueblo dónde venden comida seca y veduras
30 minutes en bus llegas a Guaranda con supermercados y el mercado semanal

ALOJAMIENTO

Tenemos 2 opciones

1. Los Dormitorios del Quilico:
- Dormitorios compartidos de 6-8 camas
- Baño con agua caliente
- WiFi
- No tenemos lavandería, puedes usar el servicio de lavandería o lavar a mano

2. Estancia con un Homestay (si está disponible):
- Conocer la cultura local y disfrutar privacidad
- Cuarto privado
- Cocina y baño compartido con la familia
- WiFi incluido
- Algún tipo de lavar (piedra de lavar o lavandaría)
- Acceso a la cocina, sala, baño y WiFi en la casa comunal (unos minutos caminando)
- $20-25/semana (individuo) o $35-40/semana (pareja) - 100% a la familia

TIEMPO LIBRE ADICIONAL

Si desea tiempo libre / o participar en actividades de prácticas, se pueden «comprar»:
- Alojamiento: 10 $ por noche
- Comidas: 4 $ por comida
Actividades: 16 $ por actividad (más gastos)

SEGURIDAD LOCAL

Guaranda uno de los lugares mas seguras de Ecuador
Hay estación de policía en el pueblo
Recomendamos que no caminas solo por la noche ni dejar nada afuera cuando no estés

Para viajar es económica y generalmente seguro, $7 para un viaje de 5 horas
