Application: Science Ed 10SL Classroom Practices in Middle School Science, Fall 2017
To be eligible for Science Education 10SL, it is highly recommended that you have taken either Science Education 1SL (formerly LS 71SL) or Math 71SL. You should also be making regular progress toward a STEM major (science, technology, engineering, and math.) You are not eligible to take Science Education 10SL if you have already completed Math 72SL, except by permission from the Academic Coordinator. You cannot take Science Education 10SL more than once.

Students participating in the California Teach program will enroll in Science Education 10SL through MyUCLA once provided a PTE number. The seminar is scheduled for Mondays from 5:00 - 6:20 p.m.

Additionally, you will be expected to spend approximately 2 to 4 hours per week in one of our partner middle schools for a total of 24 hours over the quarter. The field experience will be scheduled based on your availability and will vary by student. The internship will begin during the second week of the quarter. All 24 hours of internship need to be completed by the end of finals week of Fall Quarter.

Proof of negative TB status is required to participate in the field component of this course. You may either bring a copy of your negative TB test to the first seminar during the first week of classes, or you may email us a copy to cateach@chem.ucla.edu. Note that the TB test must have been taken within 6 months of starting your internship, and therefore must be dated April 9, 2017 or later.

See Cal Teach website for more information about specific requirements for the TB test. Please be aware that appointments at the Ashe Center often fill quickly at the beginning of each quarter (and it may take up to two to three weeks to receive an appointment) so please plan ahead and make your appointment well in advance, if necessary. You can also go to other clinics such as CVS Minute Clinic or WellnessMart MD or your own personal physician (see our web site for more info).

All the schools are relatively close to campus and you are not required to have your own transportation. (Note that we do not provide transportation or reimbursement you for transportation; if you do not have a car, you will need to take the bus).

We will provide you with your internship assignment during the first week of the quarter.

TB Test: *
I understand that I cannot attend my assigned school until a copy of my negative TB test is on file at the Cal Teach office at 1039 Young Hall, and that the test must be dated within 6 months of starting at my assigned school. I further understand that it may take the Ashe Center up to two to three weeks to schedule an appointment for me, and therefore I should make my appointment as soon as possible once accepted into the course, if necessary. I am aware that I should check with the Cal Teach office for other options should I not be able to schedule a TB test in a timely fashion at the Ashe Center.
