MSU Beyond Coal Faculty Endorsement

Mining coal and using coal to generate power is the single most destructive industrial process employed on a daily basis in our country. Through its CO2 emissions, water and air pollution, and its irreparable damage to natural landscapes, the use of coal destroys the environment and degrades public health. Furthermore, the coal industry is responsible over 30% of annual U.S. global warming pollution.

Universities have consistently been at the forefront of solving the biggest challenges facing our nation, and with problems as complex as coal and energy they have a critical role to play creating and calling for new and innovative solutions.

The Sierra Club's Campuses Beyond Coal is a campaign to transition every campus in the country away from coal to 100% clean energy sources, a critical step in ending our nation’s dependence on coal. By moving our schools beyond coal, we will take a lead, starting right here at MSU, in building a clean, renewable, and secure energy future.

I support Michigan State University Beyond Coal's efforts to end the campus’ dependence on coal and instead invest in solutions that will create clean energy jobs, protect our public health, air and water, and solve the climate challenge.
