Pan-African Feminists in Solidarity with Dr. Stella Nyanzi
24 April 2017

We the undersigned express our solidarity and support for Dr Stella Nyanzi, who is being judicially harassed and has been wrongfully imprisoned by the Ugandan state on charges of cyber harassment and offensive communication. We believe that these charges are malicious in nature, and are meant to silence and intimidate Dr. Nyanzi, and all activists who take up their civic duties to hold governments accountable to their responsibilities and promises.

The arrest of Stella Nyanzi in light of her campaign to provide sanitary pads to young students is an affront, to the fundamental right of all students to continious education. The arrest seeks to shift focus from the urgent issue of getting sanitary pads to girls who need them so that their education is not disrupted, to respectability and the hurt egos of powerful political elites and people in power. We commit to ensuring that this move to diminish the importance of Stella Nyanzi’s voice and derail the issue will not work. If anything, this case has drawn our attention to the necessity of Dr Nyanzi’s cause, and strengthened our resolve to support her work, and to speak up against the tyrannies we face in our own corners of the world.

Stella Nyanzi’s contribution to the study of gender and inequality in Uganda, as well as her work as an activist and educator has been crucial, not only for her fellow Ugandans, but for many of us across the continent and the world. In Stella, we hear the refrain again and again that the personal is political. We witness what it means to place our bodies on the line, to be unequivocal about injustice, to be bold and brazen in the face of a history of silence and repression. Stella who makes us laugh till we cry with her ebullient stories and critical narratives. Stella who reminds us that we are not to be afraid of what our bodies do, or of what our tongues say. Stella who shows us what it means to live without the shackles of respectability, who puts to use every word, to remind us that the terrors of injustice are not respectable, or sanitized. Stella who forces us to see, when we would rather shut our eyes.

We, as Pan-African feminists, draw strength from your work.
We salute you Stella, and we are with you.
