PA Trail Adoption Program
Below are some popular local trails that we are working to keep open throughout the year, especially during the summer months. If you’re interested in maintaining a trail not listed below, please use the "other" option to type the trail name, location, length and any other descriptive info -- we'll review all requests and add your trail to our list if at all possible.
Maintaining these trails as a volunteer entails weed whacking and some clipping of branches. We would like volunteers to weed whack once in early June and a second time in mid/late July. This is when fern/nettle/vegetation is at its peak. We ask volunteers to refrain from leaf blowing any trails unless approved by DCNR. Leaf blowing actually makes the trails more technical over the years as it removes all the soil from around the rocks and roots. If you encounter downed trees, let us know and we’ll make a plan to get them. DCNR and the PA Trail Dogs plan on holding a chainsaw safety course next summer for those interested in being approved to use a saw on state trails. Please do not operate a chainsaw on any of these trails if you have not yet taken an approved chainsaw safety course.
We provide all the gas, string, nippers, and anything else you may need (such as ear protection, gloves, safety glasses, etc) for our volunteers. We require the use of ethanol-free gas in all of our PA Trail Dog tools -- if you borrow any of our gas-powered tools for use, please make sure you also take a can of our ethanol-free gas with you for refilling if needed. This keeps our machines running smoothly and eliminating trips to the small engine shops for repair.
