Thanks for your interest in our experiment! Before beginning, please read the consent form below and click on the “I Agree” button at the bottom of this page if you understand the statement and freely volunteer to participate.
CONSENT FORM
Purpose
The purpose of this research is to measure the effects of dubbing versus subtitles on the enjoyment of foreign-language TV shows in a natural environment.
Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria
You must be at least 18 years of age, have an active Netflix and Google/Gmail account, and be comfortable watching TV-14 content containing some intense violence.
Procedures
The procedures for this study involve watching two episodes back-to-back of a Netflix Original foreign-language TV show in an environment where you normally watch Netflix. Prior to watching each episode, you will be asked to change the Audio/Subtitles settings in Netflix (instructions will be provided). After watching, you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire. This experiment takes approximately one hour to complete.
Confidentiality
Your participation in this experiment will be treated as confidential (at no point will you be asked for identifying information). Your data will be grouped with data from other participants for reporting and presentation purposes. In order to access the questionnaire, you will need to sign in to your Google/Gmail account (unless you are already signed in); however, neither your Google account information nor your Gmail address will be saved or linked to your responses.
Benefits, Freedom to Withdraw, & Ability to Ask Questions
The experiment is not designed to help you personally, but to help the investigators learn more about the effects of dubbing/subtitles on the enjoyment of foreign-language TV shows in a natural setting. This experiment is voluntary, and you are free to withdraw your participation at any time without consequences of any kind. You can withdraw your participation by closing your internet browser (you do not have to contact the investigators to withdraw). Finally, you are free to contact the investigators at any time to ask questions about the study itself or your participation in it (see contact information below).
Risks
The experiment involves minimal risk (i.e., the risks are no greater than those normally encountered in everyday life). The show selected for this study is the Netflix Original Series “Erased,” which has a TV-14 maturity rating (i.e., children under 14 should not watch without adult supervision). Prior to watching, you may wish to research the show to determine whether the content may be personally upsetting to you. For example, consider reading the episode descriptions in Netflix (https://www.netflix.com/title/80173711) or on another website such as IMDb (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7573686/). Again, if you start the experiment but begin to feel uncomfortable at any point, you are free to stop the show and withdraw from the experiment by exiting your browser.
Publication Statement
The results of this experiment may be (a) published in scientific journals, (b) used for educational purposes, and (c) used for professional presentations. No individual participant will be identified and all information will be reported as group averages.
