Advisory Board Members Wanted
A new Board of Advisors for The Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health (Consortium) will soon be established.

The Consortium began three years ago with the goal of uniting physicians and other health professionals to speak out about the current health harms and future risks of climate change, and the significant health benefits of climate change solutions. We’ve grown to 23 member societies with 600,000 physician members, and 33 affiliates with millions of members. The members of the medical societies are pediatricians, internists, ob-gyns, family physicians, allergists, dermatologists, and more. Affiliates include the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, National Association of Social Workers, American Psychological Association, and so on. We also have affiliated state groups. Our headquarters is at George Mason University in Virginia within the Center for Climate Change Communication (Mason 4C).

Our efforts are gaining traction, and media coverage of climate change as a human health issue, which was nearly non-existent before we started, has grown considerably. Polling research shows that health concerns are most likely to deliver public support for climate action. The second most convincing line of argument is the morality of intergenerational responsibility. The number of Americans who say climate change is “personally important to me” is now over 70%.

After several years of growth, the Consortium is at an inflection point, poised to take our organization and work to the next level. We are establishing a Board of Advisors for the Consortium. We are looking for candidates who are concerned about climate change, interested in health, and able to assist us with contacts and financial resources. Dr. Steve Schroeder, former head of RWJF, and Bill Novelli, former head of AARP, have agreed to chair this group. We are looking for other prominent Board members. There is no remuneration for this position.
