Electives: Prioritize your choices for electives by numbering 1-5 (1 = first choice) in the corresponding boxes.
In order to maximize student achievement, students in need of assistance may be reassigned to an academic intervention class in lieu of one elective choice. As always, electives are subject to change or cancellation. Budget constraints may further affect RRISD schedules and class availability.
Performance Art Courses Available to Sixth Graders
Performance Art courses require the purchase of a shirt and attendance at rehearsals and performances. Performances count as summative assessments.
0625 Band – Beginning (1st year). Students will develop basic musical literacy skills while learning to play their respective wind or percussion instruments in preparation for a sequential experience in a full band setting in subsequent years. The students will be screened for placement on an instrument based upon their physical characteristics, as well as their preference, with the goal of placing them on instruments with which they can be successful. There may be a rental fee associated with a school owned instrument.
0667 Orchestra - Beginning (1st year). Students develop basic playing skills, practice habits, music reading, and listening skills, while playing violin, viola, cello, bass, or harp. Harp students in RRISD are required to take private harp lessons. Students will be screened for placement on an appropriate instrument. There may be a rental fee associated with a school owned instrument.
0646 Choir - Beginning (First year). Students will develop choral reading techniques, ear training, vocal production, solfege, and basic music theory skills in preparation for a sequential experience in a choir setting in subsequent years. Students will also develop skills in musicianship, ear training/listening skills, individual/ensemble singing, vocal production, music reading, and performance skills.
Visual Art Courses Available to 6th Graders
0848 Theatre Arts - Beginning (1st year). First year students explore elements of drama and conventions of theatre; interpret characters, voice and body expression and the relationship of theatre to history, society, and culture. This work may culminate in a production performed for the public.
0842 Art- (1st year MS art) A $25 fee is required for supplies. This course extends the learning of basic elements and principles of design, art history, and art appreciation. Students design, develop, and create art using a variety of media.
CTE/Elective Courses Available to 6th Graders
0660 Tech Apps 1-Students will work with a variety of software to create a wide range of digital media. Keyboarding, Google Drive, Digital Citizenship, Graphic Design and Basic HTML are examples of what will be covered.
0894 Study Skills- This course is designed to provide instruction in techniques for developing better study habits. Students will learn techniques that will improve their time management, along with organizational, listening, test-taking, and note-taking skills. Time will also be spent working on homework.
LOTE Courses Available to 6th Graders
Students who select a LOTE course should not be in need of academic interventions as they will take priority as an elective course. Students who select this as their number 1 choice have a greater likelihood of being enrolled in this course.

0775 Spanish 1A**( First year)- if space is available. 7th grade students are given priority for entering the foreign language program. This course introduces the language and facilitates opportunities for students to acquire basic language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Vocabulary acquisition and communication in daily situations are emphasized. Students will also compare cultures and customs. In order to receive credit, a student must successfully complete both courses 1A and 1B.
0756 Discovering Languages and Cultures. This course is designed for students who were enrolled in a bilingual-Dual Language program in elementary school and earned 1 credit of high school Spanish through the AAPPL measure. Students will experience the acquisition of Spanish in a formal LOTE classroom. They will explore the study of Spanish grammar structures and academic vocabulary. Note - there is no high school credit for this course.
0771 French 1A** (First year)- if space is available. 7th grade students are given priority for entering the foreign language program. By clicking below, we commit that these are the courses we request to be scheduled for the 2018-2019 academic year. We understand that school resources will be allocated based on these choices. Student schedules will not be changed to select different teachers or to drop a previously selected elective. Change of mind requests will not be honored after the course verification window in May. *
