ABOUT READ ONLY MAGAZINE

Established in 2021 by Kyle Von Kubik (https://linktr.ee/kylevonkubik), READ ONLY MAGAZINE (ROM) is a bi-annual retro-gaming publication that delves into the art and passion surrounding video-games. Each issue centers around a one-word theme contributors are free to interpret as it relates to their experiences with video-games and/or video-game culture.

The concept behind the magazine is to blend the video-game magazines of the 1990s with the D.I.Y. zine culture of the 1970s. While ROM has published traditional video-game reviews and features, we’re also interested in personal narratives and creative writing that has a video-games nucleus.

At this time, ROM is a volunteer project. The main production team is comprised of Kyle and editors AJ Rush and Celeste Roberts.

SHARE YOUR PITCH FOR THE UPCOMING ISSUE!

We are currently accepting articles, art pieces, and/or comics for Issue 11: FRIEND--but, first, we want to see if your idea fits. The deadline to submit your questions and pitch is December 15, 2024.

If we think your pitch fits with ROM and this theme (FRIEND), we’ll email you to request a submission. Please note that if we pass on your pitch, we do not use your idea for any creative endeavors of our own.

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE LIKE YOUR IDEA?
If we believe your idea fits with the theme of the magazine, we will share the ROM style guide with you and confirm you can proceed with your submission.

Submissions for FRIEND are due by January 20, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE LIKE YOUR SUBMISSION?

If we like your idea and accept it for publication, we will encourage you to start developing your piece. When you're done with a first draft, you will send it to us. Our editors will then email you to go over revisions/edits. Please allow a minimum two-week turnaround time as we review submissions. Note that text in comics will be reviewed and potentially edited for grammar and spelling as well. Once you send us your finalized piece, your submission will be laid out in the issue. You will be sent its final version for your approval.

If your submission is not accepted, we will still provide broad feedback and may suggest other avenues of publication.

Please note the goal of the editing process is not to change your voice or creative interpretation of the theme; rather, our editors strive to ensure each contributor’s style and story are clearly conveyed so readers can appreciate the message.
