SYNOPSIS: Teaching American Literature in the Digital Era. Short-Story, Movie Making and Performance Art in Vietnam
"How to teach literature nowadays? The so-called digital era changed the way we read and the length of the content, as well as the timeline and our degree of concentration. At the level of the students, it may be more difficult to acquire proper reading habits or to just find an interest in literature. This debate is not new, but the specific case of Vietnam may require specific attention, and therefore specific answers; Young Vietnamese are becoming poor readers by lack of time, with a fading reading culture associated with the huge importance of a screen-based communication (and culture), with consequences with their learning capacity. Moreover, Vietnamese high-schools do not contribute to the attractivity of literature and reading in general, regarding the lack of ambition of the curriculum and the rote learning culture. The phenomenon is in contradiction to the needs and the will of learning English, especially reading and comprehension beyond literal meanings. Since years Vietnamese universities intend to follow an EMI policy but with few concerns regarding reading and especially literature. So which strategy can we follow? This presentation intends to expose the choices, cultural adaptation, and interconnection of an American literature course in the digital era." (Dr. Chris)
