We're looking to run this course in a classroom environment, subject to Covid restrictions at the time.
The Beginners' course is designed to give you all the knowledge and skills required to start keeping bees this year. It comprises 8 classroom sessions - seven theory and one practical, together with two apiary sessions.
The following theory sessions all start at 7.30pm and continue until 9.30pm
Tuesdays 15, 22 & 29 March 2022
School holiday break 5 & 12 April 2022
Continuing then on 19, 26 April and 3, 10 May 2022
Honey extraction depends on availability of honey: 14 June, 7.30pm - 9.30pm, unless otherwise advised.
Apiary sessions 10am-12 noon, 1pm-3pm
any two of :
7 & 8 May
14 & 15 May
Since so many new beekeepers make expensive mistakes making hives from flatpacks we may run a practical session to instruct people on how to make up a hive. Possibly Sunday 8 May.
The dates for the practicals are notional since we are dependent on the weather behaving itself and Covid constraints in force at the time. The dates will hold unless we have hurricane and tornados or a continuation of the lockdown....
All theory sessions will take place at the Church of the Nazarene, Fitzroy Road, S2 3BB. Practicals will be at either the JG Graves Woodland Centre, Ecclesall Woods or at our queen rearing apiary at Bole Hill, Crookes.
The course fee is £85 and is open to Sheffield BKA members only. This means that applicants have to join SBKA if they are not already members. Minimum membership is Social membership at £19.
