There is a dire need for safety and quality-of-life improvements along James Island's Maybank Highway corridor, necessitating a complete street vision to make the street safer for all users.
This corridor has had five major injuries or deaths of vulnerable roadway users in five years.
In a Charleston County/City of Charleston 2018 survey of stakeholders during the Maybank Highway overlay zoning meetings, most respondents highlighted the need for safety and connectivity improvements for people who are walking and biking. Unsafe intersections, lack of sidewalks and bike lanes, and high speed limits were all identified as problems.
We are signing this petition to request the following:
--The SCDOT expedite, fund and immediately install improvements to the segments of Maybank Highway with the highest volume of bicycle/pedestrian incidents, including but not limited to the segment from South Gevert Drive to Howle Avenue;
--The SCDOT, BCDCOG, Charleston County, and the City of Charleston must work together to fund and design a complete street for the corridor from Riverland Drive to Folly Road as quickly as possible, with assistance as needed from other entities and stakeholders.
