Lightning in a Bottle? Wine GIs and Disruptive Innovation | Prof. Dev Gangjee | 22nd September, 2025, 4:00 PM IST | Online
The Centre for the Future of Law has launched its inaugural series of presentations on contemporary scholarship by leading academics, with a presentation by Professor Dev Gangjee (University of Oxford) on Biotech and Wine GIs.

The paper examines the impact of climate change on wine production and the corresponding legal protections. Climate change alters production processes and also raises questions about the role of the law of Geographical Indications (GIs) in safeguarding reputed regional products (eg, Darjeeling tea). One climate change adaptation strategy under consideration is the use of advanced genetic engineering technologies, such as CRISPR-Cas, to modify grape varieties for resilience to changing climates. However, GIs have traditionally been positioned as a tool for preserving established production methods. This paper explores how innovation and tradition might be reconciled within the broader context of Green Biotechnology and its evolving regulatory landscape.

This continues the Centre's presentations by leading scholars on novel scholarship and ongoing work, to enable sharing of feedback and perspectives. The presentation will cover Professor Gangjee's paper and will be broadcast online, on 22nd September, 4:00 PM IST. Registered participants will recieve the link to join.
