Questionnaire for the needs of the future user of the digital platform “Meteora”.

The holistic documentation of monuments and sites of archaeological, historical or religious interest is, perhaps, the most important process for preserving and restoring our cultural heritage. The complexity of such cultural sites, coupled with the requirements for high precision, the need for 3D modelling in a high resolution and/or varying level of detail and the need for continuous monitoring due to spatial-temporal changes, damages and/or maintenance works, require the development and implementation of specialized modern techniques and procedures of multi-dimensional documentation.
The subject of the ‘METEORA’ research project is the creation of an interactive and user-friendly Information System (platform) for different users with varying requirements. The ‘METEORA’ Information System, which will be supported by both mobile and stationary devices, will implement an integrated digital recording and multi-dimensional documentation of the natural, religious, historical and cultural heritage of sites of religious and historical significance, with the following capabilities:
- visualization of detailed and highly accurate 3D geometric models
- differentiation of the details of the 3D models based on scale
- augmented reality capabilities, by incorporating old 3D drawings to represent a monument as it used to be in an earlier time period
- link to a Database with various kinds of information (e.g., religious and/or historical information, architectural drawings, 3D models) for monuments.

Within the project, innovative techniques will be developed for the collection, processing and visualization of spatial models in multiple dimensions and its connection with an appropriately organized Database. Automated data fusion methods for spatial data collected from various sources will be proposed, e.g., for directly georeferenced UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) images for inaccessible areas, laser scans and terrestrial measurements. A software package will also be developed that will create a 4D functional model, incorporate scale as the 4th dimension, so that points of the 3D model closer to the user are depicted in greater detail than distant points without requiring any action by the user. Furthermore, the system will include the addition of augmented reality elements as the 5th dimension, by representing, in a single model, constructions of the past that do not exist anymore or 3D restoration plans for monuments.

In order to build such a system, the research team wishes to take into account the experience and the opinion of all users. For this purpose, this questionnaire has been created; it is addressed to a wide group of users, including both expert scientists and professionals involved in monuments and the general public.
