Below is a list of the parent volunteer opportunities available throughout the year at Wheelock. For most of these opportunities, you will be contacted in September/October with additional information.
Winter Carnival Positions
The Winter Carnival is the most important fundraiser of the year, so committee positions really make a difference!
In order to lighten the work load and create a more fun planning process, we have created more positions with lesser duties.
THIS SINGLE FUNDRAISER BROUGHT IN NEARLY $48,000 IN ONE DAY! BE A PART OF IT!
Assistance is especially needed in the areas of event sponsorship, carnival booths, silent auction, website design/management, spirit wear and more.
All parents will have the opportunity to volunteer at their child's classroom booth on the day of the carnival. We are also looking for additional volunteers to serve on planning committees. The Winter Carnival will be held at Memorial School on Saturday, March 9, 2019.
Winter Carnival Planning Committees
I am interested in helping plan the school's largest fundraiser by sitting on a planning committee.
I am interested in training for a year then being the Head Winter Carnival Co-Coordinator with a friend for the 2020 Winter Carnival
If you have a friend, with whom you would like to work in the planning, please note below:
Wheelock Program Coordinator
This person will help teachers manage (schedule, book, confirm, and pay) different performing arts groups that help enhance learning at Wheelock. This liaison role will hopefully alleviate grade level leaders, Erin Watson and Kayla Laliberte, of the extra work involved in planning these special visits and programs,. This person would help ensure programming payment needs are communicated in a timely manner so that performers can receive their payments promptly.
I am interested in the Wheelock Program Coordinator position
Special Program Coordinator
Special Programs- Organize and coordinate special enrichment activities such as creating (and refilling) indoor recess buckets, school fundraiser walks, continuation of the kindness rock garden, and special events that may arise from school administration.
I am interested in chairing the Special Program Coordinator Role
I am interested in volunteering to assit in Special Programs
Wheelock Fall Family Fun Night
In November (specific date TBD), we will hold our Fall Family Fun night in the Wheelock cafeteria and Mango gym. You can select the theme and help determine what the event will be! (ideas that were tossed around last year-pj's and hot chocolate, pumpkin decorating and cider, movie night, dance party) We will need lots of help! We are looking for volunteers to co-chair this event, as well as volunteers to help on the actual day. This event is held in the evening. Possible volunteer positions include concessions, set-up/break down, check-out, etc. Volunteers will be contacted shortly after the school year begins.

The Wheelock PTO organizes three teacher luncheons over the course of the school year - Back-to-School, Holiday and Teacher Appreciation. Volunteers are needed to send in food/supplies and for set-up/clean-up on the day of the luncheons. Parents can also chair/co-chair this committee. Please note, the back-to-school luncheon falls on the first day of school (Wednesday, August 29 2019)
Send in Food/Supplies
Ice Cream Social
Typically held at the end of March, the Wheelock Ice Cream social is a fun family event featuring make-your-own ice cream sundaes and a DJ dance party. We are looking for two co-chairs for this event as well as volunteers to help on the actual day of the event. These positions include pre-scooping ice cream, working the toppings stations, check-in, etc. Planning for this event typically begins in January/February.

Box Tops Committee
Our Box Tops fundraiser provides a steady source of funding for Wheelock, and we want to make it even easier for families to participate in 2018-19. Bring your ideas for how we can improve this fundraiser (ie classroom incentives, increased number of competitions, etc). Other volunteer opportunities include Box Top collections and sorting. This is a fundraiser that runs throughout the school year. Planning will begin in September. This committee is a good choice for working parents, as many of the jobs can be done from home.
I am interested in being on the Box Tops Committee
Nancy Schiemer, the school nurse, runs a Walking Club for students during Tuesday/Thursday recess in Fall and Spring. Volunteers are needed during recess hours to monitor students and to record their walking progress. Scheduling will begin in September.

Third Grade DVD
Many hands make light work! In conjunction with the 3rd grade room parents, this committee will oversee the creation of the commemorative, end-of-year DVD. Photos will be of the children participating in school functions and events only. We are also looking for a few parents who would be willing to take photographs at events over the course of the year (i.e. Rocky Woods, Halloween Parade, etc.) Planning for the DVD will begin in September.
