One of the oldest stories about the mysteries surrounding the Bermuda Triangle is that of the first transatlantic voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492. Three events are said to be of note. The crew observed a fireball in the sky, their compasses malfunctioned, and a strange light could be seen above the ocean surface.
1. When did Christopher Columbus sail through the Bermuda Triangle?
There were small incidents as well. A luxury cabin cruiser that belonged to Mr Burrack, who owned a popular hotel, went along the shore of Miami together with his father to enjoy the beauty of Christmas lights in 1967. After some time the shore guard got a call from Burrack who said that his vessel hit something and asked for towing. When the guard arrived at the place after 20 minutes they couldn't find the boat. Burrack and his father disappear and have never been found.
2. Who was Mr Burrack with when his cruiser disappeared in 1967?
One of the more recent Bermuda mysteries is the disappearance of a Grumman Cougar jet in 1991 at around Halloween time. The jet was flying over the Gulf of Mexico heading for Tallahassee. The weather wasn't ideal, a bit overcast with scattered storms so in order to get up above the turbulent clouds there they asked the flight center for permission to increase the altitude. It was granted so the pilot started to do just that. As the jet was ascending into some sunlight, it vanished from the radar. The controllers couldn't believe their eyes. In the spot where they had just seen a plane, there was now only an empty space.
3. What happened to the Grumman Cougar jet in 1991?
It disappeared when flying to a higher altitude.
It crashed when trying to land.
The latest tragedy happened in 2015 when the cargo ship El Faro disappeared in this region. El Faro was a US vessel traveling from Florida to Puerto Rico. It disappeared from the radars on the 1st of October 2015 and was found as a wreck on the bottom of the ocean on the 31st of October.
4. On what date in 2015 was the wreck of El Faro found at the bottom of the ocean?
There have been so many more disappearances over the years. In 1941 the USS Proteus and USS Nereus went missing on the same route their sister ship, the USS Cyclops, had taken several decades before. In 1945, Flight 19 disappeared over the area of the Bermuda Triangle and one of the rescue aircraft sent to search for that missing plane also never came back. There are countless more stories like these, none of which have a concrete explanation.
5. What year did the ships USS Proteus and USS Nereus go missing?
Task Six: Sam is asking Jennifer about the mystery. Choose the best answers for Jennifer.
Sam: Which ocean is the Bermuda Triangle in?
It’s in the Atlantic Ocean.
A lot of ships go missing there.
It's the topic of many books and movies.
Sam: Why is the Bermuda Triangle famous?
It started hundreds of years ago.
Because a lot of planes and ships go missing there.
No, I don't think there's anything special about it.
Sam: What do scientists say happens to the ships and planes?
Most people think that aliens live underwater there.
It's near Cuba and Miami in the USA.
They say that they go missing because of strong weather.
Sam: Why do you think the ships and planes go missing?
It has happened hundreds of times.
She doesn't know why it happened.
I think that aliens take them.
Sam: Why do you think that?
No, I don't believe them at all.
Because people see a lot of UFOs in the area.
That's right, but we don't know them anymore.
