We're so glad you are interested in becoming a member of the Hillsborough County Democratic Party! 

In order to become a member, you must be a registered Democrat and live in Hillsborough County, Florida. 

Membership also comes with both privilege and responsibility. Joining the party means you will be actively working to promote Democratic values, support Democratic candidates, and get Democratic voters to the polls (a.k.a. Get Out the Vote)!

In most cases, becoming a member means you will become an elected "Precinct Captain." If there are no open Precinct Captain seats available in your voting precinct (i.e., where you live), you will become an "Appointed Member". The role of Precinct Captains and Appointed Members are largely the same: both have voting privileges within our county Party, and we rely on both to volunteer and participate in Party efforts. However, only Precinct Captains can run as a candidate for one of the county Party Officer seats (e.g., Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, etc.). Also, while Appointed Members are encouraged to assist, Precinct Captains are responsible for outreach and engagement with the Democratic voters that live within their voting precinct. 

The key roles and responsibilities of Precinct Captains (with the support of Appointed Members) include the following:

• Educate voters and Get Out the Vote (GOTV)!
• Support Democratic ideals and candidates.
• Represent the voters in your Precinct to the Party and elected government officials.
• Encourage the Democratic voters in your Precinct to get involved.
• Attend monthly meetings. More than two unexcused absences per year will result in loss of your membership. To be excused, you may notify the party in advance with a valid reason for your absence (e.g.: work, illness, family emergencies, etc.)

These responsibilities may seem overwhelming at first, but you will not be on your own or without guidance. Party leadership has worked hard to provide multiple resources and create a supportive network to help you become a successful member. There are plenty of opportunities for Democrats of all abilities to contribute. If you are dedicated, we will find the role that's fit for you.
