Are you currently at university and do you want an incredible opportunity to change the lives of young people?
Debate Mate is an educational charity that works in areas of high child poverty at some of the most deprived schools in the UK. We get YOU – university students – to mentor for a period of 16 weeks from November – April, teaching debating to either primary or secondary school student students. Teaching debating is an incredibly rewarding experience and a great opportunity to impact the lives of young people that really need it.
About Debate Mate:
In 2017-18, the Debate Mate programme went from strength to strength, and over 5000 young people took part in our programme each week across the country!
What you do:
We need mentors with a passion for teaching and debating to mentor on our programme. You will teach one-hour, weekly debating sessions to year 7-10 students (year 5-6 if Primary) over a period of 16 weeks, including our two national competitions: the Urban Debate League and Debate Mate Cup. We ask that you make a commitment to mentor for the duration of the programme, and if you’re available to work in more than one school per week, that’s brilliant!
Get paid per hour session:
You will receive a stipend of £20 for each 1 hr session you deliver (and reimburse your travel costs) plus £30-90 for any additional training or competition days - over £500 for the year! We provide comprehensive and in-depth training to make sure you’re prepared to go in to our schools. We also conduct DBS checks on your behalf.
Why get involved:
One of the greatest inhibitors to social mobility are the lack of ‘soft skills’ - confidence, communication skills, creative and critical thinking – which are exactly the skills that debating develops. Mentoring on our programme allows you to change the lives of young people who are in most need of inspiring role models like yourselves. You will also gain valuable experience that is great for your CV, and are exposed to our organisations we work with such as Teach First, Deutsche Bank, Artemis, Credit Suisse, Slaughter & May, Shell, Deloitte and more! These organisations work in partnership with us because they want to employ people like you!
Our 2018-19 programme operates in London, Manchester, Birmingham (West Midlands), Nottingham, Liverpool, Leeds, and Bristol.
Please fill in the form below to register your interest in mentoring with us, and we will contact you when mentor assessment slots open in your region.
We run assessments at the beginning of each academic year, and have now recruited all mentors for the 2018-19 programme year. Please sign up below to register for the 2019-2020 programme. We do sometimes run top-up assessments in the December/January, so you may hear from us then!
