Volunteer Registration Form + Accident Waiver and Release of Liability Form

Volunteer Opportunities:
  • The minimum age for volunteering at the sanctuary is 16 years old. We can't accommodate volunteer requests for people younger than 16 (even if accompanied by an adult).  We encourage those who are unable to volunteer to visit the sanctuary during our annual summer open house or book a visit through our website (when available).
  • On-site volunteer opportunities are available starting mid to late spring (depending on the weather and our road conditions) and continue until the end of the fall season.
  • Flexible volunteer opportunities are available outside of morning volunteering, including "help from home", occasional, event, and project-based options (discussed below).

Morning Volunteers
  • Volunteering at the sanctuary typically involves helping care of the animals by providing them with a clean, comfortable environment. This includes cleaning out stalls, cleaning the animal's common area in the barn, cleaning the housing for our feathered friends, washing dishes, cleaning the duck's swimming water, and providing fresh drinking water to the animals.
  • Physical tasks can include (but aren't limited to) lifting heavy bags of bedding and hay bales; racking, shovelling, sweeping; bending down to wash dishes and other tasks; carrying buckets of water; moving wheel barrows in and out of the barn and fenced in areas; etc.
  • Morning cleaning starts at 9am and generally takes a couple of hours.
  • After the morning clean is done, volunteers are welcome to spend some time with animals that enjoy the company of humans (this can change from day to day depending on how specific residents are feeling, and we'll provide clarity around this during each volunteer shift).
  • Morning volunteering wraps up by noon, although we often finish morning rounds much sooner, and there's no obligation to stay past when the morning "clean and feed" is complete).
  • Morning volunteer opportunities are available 7 days a week, from spring through fall
  • After reviewing your registration form, we'll invite you out to the sanctuary to see if morning volunteering is right for you (this will involve hands-on training and helping with the morning routine if you feel comfortable to do so after a brief orientation and health & safety tour)

Occasional, Event, Skill-Based, or Project-Specific Volunteering
  • There is always something to do at the sanctuary! If morning volunteering doesn't work for you, participating as your schedule allows might be right for you. Helping at the sanctuary outside of morning rounds includes volunteering with events, special projects, and the like. Some examples are listed below.
  • Preparing for and hosting events (including baking for events, preparing fundraising materials or activities, reaching out to potential event partners, coordinating vendors, etc.),
  • Helping with special projects (typically involving infrastructure improvements like installing fencing, building stalls and enclosures),
  • Maintaining the grounds
  • Resident enrichment activities
  • Helping during our winter hay prep (involves unloading hay bales - typically 80-100 bales at a time - and stacking them in the barn)
  • Participating in group volunteer days (for example, spring cleaning day when we tackle larger cleaning tasks)
  • Volunteering during our annual summer open house to ensure the biggest event of the year runs smoothly and safely.
  • Volunteering your time and skills in photography or videography to showcase our awesome animal residents.
  • Collaborating with us on a joint event or community day that supports our mission and values (promotion of animal welfare; providing a restorative/relaxing place to our residents, visitors, and animal lovers in our community; reducing the suffering of animals which can include educational workshops such as animal care from a sanctuary perspective; foster a sense of belonging by gathering animal lovers in the community to experience and participate in the power of sanctuary).
  • If you have additional ideas for volunteering with us that aren't listed here, we'd love to hear from you!

Helping From Home
  • Operating the sanctuary involves much more than direct animal care and maintaining/improving sanctuary infrastructure (though those take up most of our time and require considerable resources!)
  • To be able to provide a safe place for animals in need, volunteers who help from home are not only critical; they are how the organization is able to survive through the behind-the-scenes work that results in grants, partnerships, funding, media mentions, strategic partnerships, and a diverse network of helpful humans!
  • Helping from home might be right for you if you have skills in (or are interested in developing skills in) grant research, marketing, fundraising initiatives, public relations, communications, social media, policy and program development, online research, and nonprofit development.
