Learning Program 2018-2019 Registration
The Down Syndrome Community of Puget Sound is offering 3 levels of the Learning Program for the 2018-2019 school year: Level 1 through Level 3. During each 90 minute session, children receive small group instruction with a focus on literacy, numeracy, fine motor skills and language development from special educators and therapists. Simultaneously in a separate classroom, parents in the program receive instruction on a wide range of topics. Each children's classroom will include a head teacher, occupational therapist, speech therapist and 2 teacher's aides. Please see below for each class description. Note: age/grade range is merely a suggestion; placement depends on the developmental readiness of each child. The classes meet on the following Saturday's: September 8, October 13, November 17, December 8, January 12, February 9, March 9, April 6, May 11, June 8.

Level 1 - 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Level 2 - 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Level 3 - 1:00 - 2:30 PM

The classes will only be offered if a minimum number of 5 students are registered. If not enough students have registered, a level may be cancelled and full refunds will be issued.

A limited number of scholarships are available for up to half of the class fee. The class fee can be paid in full or in 2 equal installments.

Note: If you are repeating a class and/or have the class curriculum, the cost is $300.

Registration deadline: August 1, 2018

Level 1 ($500)
Level 1 is geared towards families with a child between the ages of 5-7 years old, or K to 1st grade. This class is best suited for families of students that are beginning to show an interest in letters and numbers and can attend to an activity for 5-10 minutes. Students should be able to understand about 50 words. This class focuses on building beginner literacy skills and materials are geared towards whole word (sight) acquisition though we quickly move-on to carrier phrases.

Level 1 includes:
- Ten 90 minute classes for parents/caregivers and child
- DSF Sight Word Readers - Sentences

Level 2 ($500)
Level 2 is geared towards families with a child between the ages of 6-9, or 1st to 3rd grade, depending on skill level. Level 2 builds on skills acquired in Level 1 and students entering this class should have a solid foundation of Level 1 skills. They should have a bank of sight words as we will be working with predictable text such as carrier phrases and sentences with familiar pattern and repetition. Students will be developing beginning text-based comprehension skills such as understanding new vocabulary and recalling what they have just read.

Level 2 includes:
- Ten 90 minute classes for parents/caregivers and child
- Lakeshore Emergent Book Reader sets and Lakeshore Emergent Book Reader Supporting Materials: 3-double-sided boards (1 picture/word matching board and 1-WORD Draw-A-Line 1-PICTURE Draw-A-Line) plus picture and word flash cards

Level 3 ($500)
Level 3 is geared towards families with a child approximately between the ages of 7-10 years old, or 2nd to 4th grade, depending on skill level. Level 3 builds on skills acquired in Level 2 and students entering this class should have a solid foundation of Level 2 skills. Students should be comfortable working with predictable text as they will be introduced to sentences that have less repetition and reliance on pattern. Students will be developing within-the-text comprehension skills using strategies to understand sequence the main idea and details of what they have read.

Level 3 includes:
- Ten 90 minute classes for parents/caregivers and child
- RAZ readers and accompanying worksheets along with the matching word board/cards
