Rebecca Raby, a Professor and sociologist in the Department of Child and Youth Studies, Brock University, Canada. She studies constructions of childhood and youth, intersecting inequalities in young lives, qualitative approaches, and theories of participation and agency. Her current research projects are both qualitative and located within Canada. They focus on 1) young people’s views and experiences connected to their first jobs and 2) homeless children’s experiences living with their families in shelter.
Rebecca will be discussing young people’s views on early work, including what they value and what raises concerns; how they think about navigating workplace challenges; and specific experiences of young people in various kinds of work, including those connected to safety.
Edward van Daalen, a socio-legal researcher working on the intersections of international law, children’s rights, and development studies. He is currently an O’Brien Fellow in Residence at the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism (CHRLP) at McGill University and holds a PhD in law from the Centre for Children’s Rights Studies at the University of Geneva. His current research projects focus on children and work, reviving children’s liberation, and situating ‘family abolition’ in critical children’s rights scholarship.
Edward will be discussing the various regulatory models of child labour that exist in Canada, teasing out questions about children’s evolving capacities and parental preferences in setting minimum age standards, and how Canada’s approach complexifies our understanding of international campaigns to ‘eradicate’ child labour.
