Because our playa courtyard is so beautiful already and is filled with amazing art, we have decided to focus most of our art grants for 2015 on performances and events. That doesn't mean we won't fund art installations, kinetic art or sculptures, etc. It means we will consider the type of art when we review proposals and we will prioritize events and performances over traditional art. We anticipate funding a bit of both.
Our vision is to have a spectacular courtyard and experience for C&J campers and our guests throughout the week of Burning Man 2015. We are hoping to award up to $5,000 in Art Grants to Comfort & Joy campers this year, depending on our budget (which won't be finalized until we complete our Afterglow fundraiser on June 27, 2015). In the past, we have awarded up to 10 grantees in a year, so awards usually range from $100 up to $1,000, but rarely more than that.
You must submit your application by July 5, 2015 at 5pm Pacific to be considered for a grant.
Art grants may only be used for materials and will not be granted to pay for time or labor.
We will evaluate all Art Grant proposals using the following criteria:
The degree to which the applicant has been a contributing member of Comfort & Joy over the years.
The degree to which the applicant has been a high contributor this year.
The degree to which the art, if a sculpture, will be re-used in the future and belong to Comfort & Joy or, if it's a performance/event, it will make a big splash/be remarkable at the burn.
The degree to which the art supports the Comfort & Joy Mission.
The degree to which the art is for public enjoyment (vs. camp-only enjoyment).
