Bargaining to Improve the Research Community at Columbia!
Dear [Elected Representative],

As the unionized postdocs and associate researchers of Columbia University, we want to thank you for your continued support for research. We care deeply about our work and are proud to contribute to making New York City a major global hub of academic and scientific progress.

Columbia has historically been at the forefront of research and scientific innovation in NYC and is the largest employer of postdoctoral researchers in the city. Unfortunately, Columbia has started to fall behind other institutions, undermining our ability to focus on our research and making it more difficult to attract and retain the best researchers. Last year, a majority of us voted to form Columbia Postdoctoral Workers-UAW as our Union and we are excited to be bargaining a first union contract that we believe will make Columbia a more inclusive, equitable, and competitive place to do research.

However, Columbia has refused to make progress on key issues and continues to make unreasonable proposals that ignore the contributions we make to Columbia and science more generally. As professionals who play a critical role in cutting-edge research we help bring almost a billion dollars in grants to NYC annually, seeking cures to major diseases, improving methods of addressing climate change, developing new and innovative technologies, enhancing our understanding of international relations, and pursuing many other valuable research goals.

Please encourage President Bollinger to prioritize research and scientific progress by reaching a fair agreement with our Union’s bargaining committee by April 6th, 2020 that provides timely recourse on harassment and discrimination, fair salaries, and more equitable benefits that incentivize success and help attract the best researchers.
