I’m looking for 16 pieces of new writing from LGBTQI+ storytellers around the country for a series of ‘Queerstories in Lockdown’ podcast episodes. I am specifically looking for people who have been impacted by the pandemic and lockdown – economically, psychologically, professionally - but the stories do not have to literally be about the past few months. They can be about something that’s happened this year, or they can be thematically linked – think stories about loneliness, stories about family and intimate relationships, stories about political upheaval and protest, or about health and illness.
Stories will be approx. 15 minutes long, so around 2000 words. Storytellers will be paid $400.
Storytellers will most likely need to record their stories at home, but I will offer technical advice and support, and access needs will be met – just mention yours in the application form. There may be an opportunity for live performances for small audiences in certain cities, but that is yet to be confirmed.
WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR
• a personal story about you ie narrative non-fiction
• something surprising or unexpected, intimate and intriguing
• strong writing skill
WHAT I AM NOT LOOKING FOR
• opinion pieces, lectures or political speeches; by all means be political – our lives are political – but weave your politics into narrative rather than writing something educational
• stories that are didactic about gender and sexuality – tell me a story about your experiences and emotions, don’t educate the listener about your identity
PROCESS
As the producer of the series I act as editor, often suggesting changes based on my knowledge of the audience. You will need to submit copy for feedback in advance of recording.
Some people use the Queerstories platform to discuss quite personal issues. This is welcome – and it’s an honour that people feel safe to do so – but please be sure you are ready to write about the issue creatively and that you are open to feedback and edits. Please also consider the audience experience if discussing traumatic events.
I know that applying for things at the moment is draining and can be disappointing, so I have tried to keep the form brief. Everyone who submits a full application will receive a free ticket to a Queerstories event when the venues and theatres fully reopen.
