2020 Artist-in-Residence Program

Apply online via this form.

The Friends of The Music Mansion invites composers and musicians residing in Rhode Island to apply for their 2020 Artist-in-Residence program.
The Artist-in-Residence will curate, organize, and produce five concerts of the First Fridays concert series at The Music Mansion in Providence, RI.

• To place The Music Mansion squarely in the center of Providence’s vibrant concert music scene.
• To attract new audience members to The Music Mansion.
• To increase the visibility of, and support for, physical upgrades at The Music Mansion.

“First Fridays” is an annual series of chamber music concerts at The Music Mansion, curated by a different artist each year, and showcasing local and regional musicians. Evening concerts are held on the first Friday of the month, February through June (February 7, March 6, April 3, May 1, June 5, 2019) with a suggested donation for admission. Composers and performers are encouraged to present their own work/collaborations as well as a variety of “good music,” in support of The Music Mansion's mission. In order to attract new audience members and supporters, and to provide freedom of artistic vision for the curator, the series is open to a diversity of musical styles. First Friday performances should focus on contemporary classical, jazz, folk, or electronic/multimedia works and may include multimedia and/or historical works as well (NB: We do not have video capabilities at this time). Strong proposals will have specific programming details and an overall curatorial vision/theme/arc for the series.

The Artist-in-Residence is responsible for programming, hiring and/or rehearsing musicians, and serving other performance-related administrative duties, including the following:

• Coordinating with Music Mansion staff and independent contractors (with whom we have established relationships) re: graphic design, printing, audio/visual documentation, and bartending
• Publicity, including writing and distributing press releases, calendar listings, updating our website, social media pages, and YouTube channel, sending a monthly newsletter to promote First Fridays and other events at The Music Mansion, and putting up posters throughout Providence two weeks prior to each concert
• Creating and printing concert programs, mailing list sign-up sheets, menus, etc.
• Stage management, set-up/tear down; and other tasks related to concert presentation
• Securing in-kind donations for reception supplies
• Administrative tasks related to the concert series
• Report to the Board of Directors of the Friends of The Music Mansion as needed

One of the features most attractive to creative musicians is the space itself. In its current state, The Music Mansion offers two quality pianos, an intimate and welcoming performance/recording space, and reception area. The first floor is available for the Artist-in-Residence to reserve for rehearsals, performances, and recording sessions, whenever the space is unused for other events.

Presently, The Music Mansion is unable to host artists-in-residence on site, so there is no physical residency required with this position. Applicants must be US citizens or have permission to work in the United States and be a resident of Rhode Island to be considered. It is preferred, but not required, that applicants have experience with concert production and/or arts administration.

The Artist-In-Residence will receive a $2500 stipend, to be paid monthly in $500 increments at each concert. Performers at each concert will receive a $500 stipend (total).

Applicants will be notified of the results no later than September 1, 2019.
