Introduction: Chennai, like many Indian cities, once had a beautiful system for water management. When the water reached the maximum capacity in one lake, it cascaded into the next lake almost seamlessly. As a result of rapid and unplanned urbanization, today these lakes carry raw sewage from one lake to another, flooding all the neighbourhood areas.
We also observed that in some neighbourhoods, the community initiative has led to a lot of impact, from clearing encroachments to mobilizing funds for reviving the lakes, while in other areas, the communities are unaware of where to begin their journey in the fight to save their lakes.
This masterclass is for all those individuals and communities who have a concern about the lakes in their neighbourhood, to help understand the ecosystem as a whole and also specific issues about a lake. Participants can learn how to how to gather information about their lakes and audit them to take an active part in flood mitigation measures and hold the government accountable.
