We are not asking you to disengage from politics or bury your head in the sand. On the contrary, we want you to deeply engage with the issues you care about
The Institute of Politics is offering a one-week challenge to students, staff and Fellows to ditch social media for the week and to pop by the house each day for alternative activities – with food, of course. Come to one event, or join us for all five, as a way to recharge and reset.
Schedule of events (all of the below will take place at the Institute of Politics, 5707 S Woodlawn Ave):
IOPlaylist: Put Some Records On
Monday, November 10th, 5:00 - 6:00 pm
Submit a song that is resonating with you right now, and come prepared to listen to the group’s selections and share about your own choices! Featuring Mallory McClaire, owner of Beverly Phono Mart record store and former IOP speaker series senior associate director.
IOPause: Guided Meditation & Breakfast
Tuesday, November 11th, 10:00 - 11:00 am
Breakfast & Break. Take a morning scrolling pause with 30 minutes of guided meditation with Katarina Stanisavljevic, UC Buddhist Studies Divinity Student and Meditation instructor, followed by breakfast.
IOPlay: Political Trivia Night
Wednesday, November 12th, 7:30 - 9:00 pm
Join us at the IOP for a fun-filled, student-led trivia night! We will be testing your political knowledge with questions ranging from political history to silly “who said this” quotes. Come solo to be paired up, or bring a team – either way, prepare for some competitive fun (and some cool prizes)! We will have post-dinner snacks (hello Insomnia cookies) and refreshments.
IOProcess: Social Media, Politics & You
Thursday, November 13th, 3:30 - 4:30 pm
Join us for a dialogue led by the IOP's Student Advisory Board on how social media contributes to our understanding of current events, brings awareness to social movements, and impacts our mental health. We will discuss algorithms, infographics, monetization, democratization, the proliferation of graphic imagery and more.
IOPeople: Trek on Immigration and Community Care: Policy and Practice on the South Side
Friday, November 14th, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
Dialogue on immigration policy and community organizing, followed by an afternoon service activity at La Tiendita in Washington Park.
