Background: The Thorne family values higher education. Gerald Thorne, a former Wisconsin bank president, and his wife Norrita, a former middle school English and history teacher, attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where they received their Bachelor of Science degrees and where Gerald also received his Master of Business Administration degree. Their son, Jeffrey (KHS 1981), received his Bachelor of Science degree from Madison and his PhD in genetics from the University of Washington. Their daughter, Michele (KHS 1983), received BA and JD degrees from Northwestern University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. Both Jeff and Michele were recipients of Kohler Foundation Scholarships. The establishment of this scholarship is an opportunity for the Thornes to give something back to the community that was so generous to their family.
