We are grateful that this Supportive Sisterhood Program is partially funded by the City of Kitchener’s RISE project grant. This project is situated in the City of Kitchener which is on the Traditional Territory of the Chonnonton, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee Peoples.
The project aims to empower young women (12-18 years old) through intergenerational, intercultural and collaborative learning experiences of the special period from adolescence to adulthood. You will have an opportunity to learn from Elders, peers and facilitators about diverse cultural practices of girlhood and coming-of-age. The session will end with a celebration "graduation" of your development of a culturally-affirming sense of belonging, solidarity and sisterhood.
The sessions will take place every Thursday, from 4-6 p.m and will alternate between zoom and in-person. The in-person session will take place at the Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty of Social Work campus (120 Duke St. West, Kitchener). Refreshments and bus tickets are provided!
Week 1, June 11 (Zoom) : Introduction to the program and welcoming
Week 2, June 18 (In-person): Indigenous stories of girlhood and coming of age
Week 3, June 25 (Zoom): Addooyyee stories of girlhood and coming of age
Week 4, July 2(In-person): Activities based on Addooyyee and Indigenous stories
Week 5, July 9 (Zoom): Political welcoming settler-settler and Indigenous-settler relations
Week 6, July 16 (In-person): Culture 1and 2 - Intergenerational stories of girlhood and coming of age
Week 7, July 23 (Zoom): Culture 1 and 2 - Cross cultural activities based on stories
Week 8, July 30 (In-person): Integrative learning and practice
Week 9, August 6 (In-person): Integrative learning and dress rehearsal
Week 10, August 13 (In-person): Graduation with friends and family
