Design & Pitch Summer PD Application
Thank you for your interest in Design & Pitch! Please use this form to apply for the Design & Pitch summer professional development. Below you will find more information about the Design & Pitch project and the specifics of the summer program for teachers of grades 6-12.

Overview of the Project
We are researchers from North Carolina State University in the College of Education and we are interested in testing a new middle and high school mathematics activity called the Design & Pitch (D&P) Challenges in STEM. In these challenges, students use math and science to invent entrepreneurial solutions to STEM design challenges. They work collaboratively to build, test, refine, and ultimately pitch their solutions to a panel of judges. Each challenge culminates with a 5-minute pitch competition. These pitch competitions are designed to support the learning of specific middle and high school mathematics concepts, while also increasing students’ interest and engagement in STEM, especially mathematics.

Summer Specifics and Compensation
As part of a research study on supporting teachers’ use of the D&P Challenges, we are offering a three day professional development session on August 7-9, 2023, where teachers will experience participating in a challenge and learn how to use D&P Challenges in their classrooms. Additionally, teachers will be asked to participate in interviews and focus groups with the research team and provide feedback on challenge materials. Participation in the summer PD comes with a $400 stipend and 20 hours of continuing education units.
Academic Year Research and Compensation Opportunity
We are also offering an opportunity for participating teachers try one of these challenges in their mathematics classrooms during the 2023-2024 school year. As this is part of a research study, this experience would include 1) a pre and post-challenge survey measuring students’ interest in STEM-related careers; and 2) a post-challenge focus group carried out with three groups of students (a total of 9-12 students). Additionally, we ask that members of our research team be allowed to observe and video record your class as you launch the challenge and one student group per class as they work on the challenge. For each challenge that is implemented for research, teachers will receive an additional $250 stipend.
