We have many volunteer opportunities for you here at Northwoods. They range from a few hours at a time to joining a committee. Any amount of volunteering is appreciated, and your child will be so excited to have you participate. Experience is not necessary!

Our Treasurer will serve his last term during the 2024/2025 academic year. This is an executive board position that involves setting and tracking the Northwoods PTA budget, reimbursing individuals via check writing, providing a treasurer's report at monthly PTA meetings, filing taxes, and completing annual audits. We highly recommend shadowing Jason during his last year as Treasurer. Are you interested in becoming the Northwoods PTA Treasurer?

Committees: Committee members help plan and collaborate for school functions and activities. Time commitment is open and flexible

Cultural Arts (Aug-Sept planning): Attend an art fair in August to gauge interest in acts. Your children are more than welcome to join. Help find, coordinate, and work with the United Arts Council to book cultural performances/artists for the school year.

Audit Committee (once a year): Coordinate with the treasurer to review transactions and bank accounts. There need to be three other PTA members.

Membership (Aug-Oct): Help Northwoods PTA increase its membership by coordinating a raffle for parents and staff. Man a welcome table at the beginning of the year!

Garden Coordinator (Year-Round): This position leads the fall and spring Recess in the Garden programs and the Summer maintenance program. It includes planning and sourcing plants and seeds, pest management, weed management, and upkeep of garden structure(s). The coordinator also plans a calendar of activities for children during recess (mostly planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting) and directs other adult volunteers to assist during recess times.

Recess in the Garden Leader(s) (fall and /or spring season): Works with the Garden Coordinator to help plan and execute Recess in the Garden. Commits to consistently leading Recess in the Garden weekly (i.e., leading every K-1 recess). Directs other adult volunteers to assist the students

Recess in the Garden Assistants (one-time or as frequently as desired): Join the Garden Leader or Coordinator during Recess in the Garden activities. Help children with gloves, watering cans, planting, weeding, and harvesting. No planning involved; just show up! Each Recess in the Garden shift usually covers two recesses and is a commitment of about 1.25 hours.

Summer Garden Watering and Maintenance Crew (families commit to one or more weeks in the summer): Help maintain the health of the garden by frequent deep watering and weed and pest management as necessary. This may also include some planting. Summer volunteers are encouraged to harvest produce for home use.

Staff Appreciation (time varies): Plan or Assist with staff appreciation throughout the year (staff breakfast, snack purchases, Teacher appreciation week, and other special occasions).

Yearbook (ongoing commitment): Work with the art teacher to get cover artwork in for October, organize and confirm student photos in January, turn in the finished yearbook in March for a proof, and coordinate and work with Strawbridge for online sales and distribution at the end of the year. This is best done with two people.

Spirit Wear & Spirit Products: These are two separate jobs that multiple individuals can complete. 1) (summer) Work with Booster to ensure the spirit wear store is open and ready for orders at the beginning of the school year. Ensure information is sent to the school population for ordering. 2) (Completed at the beginning of the school year) Coordinate logo design and t-shirt production for the free t-shirts provided to students and staff. Organize and deliver t-shirts to the school.

Fundraising (ongoing commitment): Help plan school fundraising events such as Spirit Nights/Days with local businesses and our annual big fundraising event. This is best done with two or more individuals.

Spirit Rock Communications (ongoing commitment): Monitor the fundraising email form for spirit rock reservations that come in throughout the year. Update and manage the reservation calendar.

Communications (limited time commitment/ongoing): Help design flyers, newsletters, and social media posts for Northwoods events.

Advocacy (a few annual meetings): Attend County/Government meetings about education and policy changes. Report back needed information to the Northwoods PTA.

5th Grade End-of-Year Celebration: This is best done in a team. Coordinate an end-of-year celebration for the 5th graders and help the admin team with the moving-up ceremony.

Run Club: Training sessions completed in the Fall and Spring.

What clubs or committees would you like to see incorporated into our PTA to better serve the needs and interests the students?

Annual One-Time Events – You can help plan them or just help the day of/the week of the event

Fall Picnic (September/October): Work to coordinate approved food trucks and other activities for the day.

Walk to School Day (Early October): Work with the local government to ensure safety patrols are in place for the walk. Gather snack donations for the morning.

Trunk or Treat (October): Coordinate with teachers, parents, and staff to donate candy, decorate trunks; secure volunteers with Cary Teen Council to help with parking and traffic safety.

Food Drive (November/December): Coordinate with school social worker to identify Northwoods families in need of bagged groceries over winter holidays. Advocate for this event, collect food, sort/organize with 5th grade helpers, and deliver anonymously.

Book Fair (February/March): Work with Scholastic and Ms. Vaughn to coordinate volunteers and set up for the book fair.

International Festival (every other year, alternating with STEAM Fair): Gather interested families and musical/dance acts for the day. Coordinate approved food trucks for the event as well.

STEAM Fair (every other year, alternating with the International Festival): Collect information from students interested in an event display. Work with local businesses and families for STEAM-related activities in the evening. Coordinate approved food trucks for the event as well.
