The team was assembled due to the fact that 25% of high school students do not have access to fresh, healthy produce or food due to their current living situations. An additional 60% of students are less than confident in their ability to create a healthy meal for their families, even though 40% of those students are responsible for cooking
The internship begins in June where interns will be trained on business management, nutrition, cooking, lesson design, professional development, and much more. The program includes a community engagement component where interns will visit community groups to practice the information that they learn.
The internship is available to students of high schools participating in the School Market Program and must be rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors for the 2019-2020 school year.
Teen Nutrition Team Interns will participate in paid training 2 days a week during the summer beginning in June and ending in August. The internship continues into the school year in a volunteer format to manage the School Market & Fresh Market programs at their school with staff and student support. Interns that complete the program in May 2020 will receive a stipend for their participation.
Summer:Day 1 - Mondays (8am - 5pm): Training Day; will include kitchen training and preparation.Day 2: Wednesdays or Thursdays (10am - 2pm)Participants will go into the field with the Team Manager to teach nutrition education to kids at Summer Food sites or at Second Harvest feeding partners..
At the end of the summer, Interns will compete for 1 part-time, paid Jr. Nutrition Educator position working with Elementary School Families in our district.
School Year:Student Managers will work with their designated School Coordinator and Student Volunteer Group to oversee the School Market and Fresh Market programs. Once-a-month, Managers will host a Fresh Market or free produce distribution for their peers to benefit from.
The Team will come together once-a-month to meet about the program and talk about successes and improvements for future lessons.
Eligibility:• Must attend Jones High School, Oak Ridge High School, or Osceola High School• Must be a sophomore, junior, or senior during the 2019-2020 school year• Transportation assistance is available if reliable transportation is unavailable
