2019 WA-BLOC CDF Freedom Schools

Dear Change Maker,

WA-BLOC (Washington Building Leaders of Change) is a non-profit organization rooted in South Seattle committed to building Black and Brown Excellence in the education system to transform our communities. Founded in 2016, WA-BLOC is led by a team of intergenerational, place-based leaders who provide year-round “place-based” programming at Rainier Beach High School with a mission to empower academic, creative, community-connected lifelong leaders through high-impact academic and “place-based” leadership development.

WA-BLOC has been selected as a sponsor organization for the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® program this summer. The CDF Freedom Schools program provides summer school enrichment that helps youth fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, mobilizes their community for social action, and generates more positive attitudes toward learning.

From July 8th-August 16th, WA-BLOC will provide a FREE 6-week high-impact summer program for 100 youth ranging from K-5 and 9-12 grade, serving the Rainier Beach community. Through this program we build literate, motivated, empowered leaders of change. With a 10:1 student to teacher ratio, our scholars will experience a program ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in life. Nationally, over 70,000 children have matriculated through the program with nearly all of the children’s parents testifying to an improvement in their child’s scholastic achievement the following school year. Locally, Rainier Beach scholars grew an average of 20 months in reading levels last summer. In 2015, scholars led a successful transit justice campaign to challenge the current walk-zone policy, ultimately leading to creation of the Youth ORCA program through which 15,000 free, year round ORCA cards have been distributed to middle and high school students. We are excited to invite you to join us in the movement for community change through providing high quality summer learning opportunities and intergenerational leadership development.
