As a part of the internship, you will be required to attend the TCPD summer school. And at the end of your internship you will be required to write a short paper on the work you have done during the internship and deliver a final presentation.
Listed below are projects and brief description of the projects. You will be selecting up to 3 projects. If selected, we will do our best to match you with your first preference. Some of the projects have a required skillset so please read these carefully.
1: CODING CONTENTION: Read articles printed in the media and extract information (who is involved? what happened? where did it happen? who was targeted? identifiable issues/grievances?) based on a codebook.
2: PROCESSING 2019 ELECTION RESULTS: Download and put in tabular format the results of the 2019 elections. Clean the data such that it conforms to the current standards (required skills: Excel, R/Python, basic web scraping).
3: MERGING CENSUS AND POLLING STATION DATA: Merge 2001 and 2011 census data and polling station electoral data (required skills: Excel, R/Python).
4: MERGING LOK DHABA AND ADR: Verify and merge ADR data with election data. This will also require some level of engagement with ADR (required skills: Excel, R/Python).
5: PROFILING WOMEN POLITICIANS AND POLITICAL DYNASTIES: detecting political families in the GE and AE data, write short biographical profiles of political families, profiling women candidates to state and general elections.
6: MEDIA ANALYSES: Build a dataset on attacks/violence perpetrated on politicians, scraping media sources across states; What does the media report on the Parliament? How has it changed over time? - Scraping multiple english newspapers to find out what kind of reporting gets precedence in the media (required skills: Excel, R/Python, basic web scraping)
7: QUESTION HOUR WEB TOOL: providing categories to questions: identifying relevant categories, determining how the questions can be easily (computationally) coded into categories (required skills: Excel (R, Python preferred))
8. FIELD WORK: Primary data collection in states such as West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra. Native local language speakers will be preferred.
