A recent groundswell of new computational techniques for
studying regulatory texts and policy outcomes holds promise for scholars and
regulators to better understand regulatory governance. It would be beneficial
for the field to take stock of the developments in computational analysis of
regulation and to think holistically about how these tools can be used to
improve regulatory governance while ensuring they do not displace, and in fact
strengthen, the critical role of citizens and stakeholders.
As part of the upcoming conference of the International Association on Regulatory Governance that will be held on June 17-18,
2024 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, we invite paper submissions
for a hybrid panel on "Computational Analysis of Regulation and Governance."
The panel will provide an interdisciplinary platform for
scholars and practitioners to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and explore
solutions for the analysis of regulation, its governance, and regulatory
systems that can advance the knowledge-producing benefits of computational
tools or reduce their risks.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Automated information retrieval for regulatory
analysis;
- Applications of Large Language Models (LLMs) to retrieve,
classify, and translate/simplify regulatory text;
- Synthetic control design for regulation and governance evaluation;
- Agent-based simulations of regulatory processes,
bureaucratic structures, and outcomes;
- Replicability and reliability of computational
methods in regulatory research;
- Uses of computational techniques to improve
information provision to citizens and stakeholders
We encourage submissions from researchers across various
disciplines, including political science, computer science, economics,
sociology, and law.
We particularly welcome papers that propose co-designed
user-friendly analytic tools for researchers and practitioners in transdisciplinary
collaboration teams.
Please submit your proposal by March 20, 2024 by filling this form. For any inquiries or further information, please email us.
Looking forward to seeing you in Philadelphia -- or online!
