Ready, get set, measure!
By the end of this activity you will be able to say: "I can measure the length of an object using a ruler."
For this activity, you will need a ruler, scratch paper and a pencil. If you do not have a ruler check your email for a printable ruler from your teacher.
What you are going to to:
You are on a scavenger hunt to find different objects around your house. Once you have found the object, use your ruler to see how long it is. You can have a sibling or parent to help you if you need. *Make sure you start on the notch of the ruler that has a zero below it. If there is no zero then start on the first notch--sometimes it is the edge of the ruler. Make sure you label if you are measuring in inches or centimeters (in.=inches, cm.=centimeters). If it is not exactly on a number, write the number it is closest to. If it is exactly half way between numbers then the rule is to put the higher number.
Steps:
1. Find the first object on the list as seen in this form.
2. Measure the object
3. Write the object and it's length on your piece of scratch paper.
4. When you are done measuring each item, fill in each answer box you see in the form according to which object it was. Put the object you measured with the length right next to it. For example: Pen, 6 inches
5. Answer reflection questions on the form.
Bonus step:
When you are all done, if you would like to measure more things than what is on this form, use the last answer box at the bottom to add any other things you measured.
