Dear MCBA members,
The 2016-2017 Minority Cannabis Business Association (MCBA) are pleased to announce that MCBA will be accepting nominations for our 2017-2018 Board of Directors. The Minority Cannabis Business Association is the first 501(c)(6) not for profit business league created specifically to progress the cannabis industry by increasing diversity.
The term begins November 1, 2017 and lasts for one year. The deadline for nominations is September 5. MCBA seeks a broad range of talented and dedicated professionals in and adjacent to the cannabis industry to serve in leadership positions on its Board. Board members are individuals who are deeply committed to the mission of MCBA to create equal access and economic empowerment for cannabis businesses, their patients and consumers, and the communities most affected by the war on drugs. This is a wonderful opportunity to advance your level of participation in MCBA, the cannabis industry, and your community.
This year MCBA wrote its first statewide model legislation, supported the introduction of Senator Cory Bookers ‘Marijuana Justice Act’ and successfully lobbied for the country’s first municipal cannabis tax allocation for communities targeted by the war on drugs in Portland, Oregon. We held our signature “Rise Up! Expungement Program” with Marley Natural in Portland and Seattle covering the legals costs and fees associated for qualified individuals associated with the expungement of cannabis charges.
In less than two years, our membership has grown to more than 700 people in 38 states who are learning more about each aspect of the cannabis industry. In addition, more than 30 companies from across the country have joined in the belief that we must grow the cannabis industry through diversity, inclusion and ensuring that communities of color benefit from the prosperity of the amazing cannabis plant.
We must have a committed Board of Directors to ensure this movement grows in a healthy, impactful and sustainable way. In choosing among nominees the Board of Directors considers candidates’ backgrounds and experiences in six areas:
*Contributions to mission of the MCBA in the areas of Social Justice, Economic Empowerment and Patient/Consumer Awareness*Cannabis industry experience*Operational leadership*Executive experience*Experience fundraising and assessing and administering finances*Previous Board of Directors Experience
To be considered for a seat on the Board of Directors nominees must be members in good standing with MCBA as an equity holder of a MCBA member company or an individual Devoted member.
It is important for nominees to know that volunteer time and work go into this commitment. The time required to participate as a Board member is dependent upon which committee(s) you chair and the nature and timing of issues being considered by the Board at any given time.
The MCBA Board of Directors advises nominees should anticipate: *Active participation on the Board and its committees will require on average 1-3 hours of work per week, depending on the time of year and nature of issues being addressed. *Special projects may require additional time or attention. *Board members are expected to participate in monthly Board meetings, which average 1 hour, and attend at least 2 of our 3 in-person board meetings, one of which must be our annual board retreat. In-person board meetings are generally held in conjunction with major industry events. *The board term begins in November 1, 2017 and is for one full year. Our first in-person board meeting will be on November 14, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV.
