2023 AIAA HRS - YP Fall Technical Excellence Lecture
AIAA HRS Young Professionals Fall 2023 Technical Excellence Lecture:
Advances in Aero-Propulsive Modeling for eVTOL Using Experimental Data
By Benjamin Simmons

The AIAA HRS Young Professionals Committee is proud to host its Fall 2023 Technical Excellence Lecture in a hybrid lunch & learn format at the NASA Langley Research Center, featuring the work of the 2024 AIAA HRS Robert Mitcheltree Young Engineer of the Year Award Winner, Ben Simmons.

BIODr. Benjamin M. Simmons is a Research Aerospace Engineer in the Flight Dynamics Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. His research interests include aircraft system identification, design of experiments, aerodynamic modeling for complex aerospace vehicles, and flight dynamics simulation development. He received a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Tech in Spring 2023.

ABSTRACT: Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft have recently emerged as new aeronautical vehicles intended to enable future Advanced Air Mobility transportation missions. Flight dynamics models for eVTOL aircraft are needed to support technology advancement for many related disciplines; however, complex eVTOL vehicle attributes, including many control effectors and significant propulsion-airframe interaction effects, present a challenge for efficient and accurate vehicle modeling using traditional methods. Building on established techniques applied for fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, this presentation will highlight recent advances in aero-propulsive modeling and system identification for transitioning eVTOL aircraft using experimental data. The lecture’s topics will include formulation of eVTOL-vehicle-specific aero-propulsive modeling strategies, wind-tunnel experiment designs leveraging response surface methods and programmed test input executions, and a full-envelope flight-test system identification approach. The empirical modeling techniques that will be discussed can be readily applied to many different eVTOL vehicle configurations to facilitate rapid, accurate flight dynamics simulation development.
