8th Grade Band Practice Report - 4th Nine Weeks 2023-24
Students who practice improve and are successful. Practice reports help you to organize your practice and receive credit for your hard work. Your director can tell how well and how often you practice by how well you play each day. Remember, honesty is what you do when people are watching. Integrity is what you do when people are not. Demonstrate integrity when completing your practice report.

Suggested Practice Routine:
If you practice a minimum of 30 minutes in a session, this is how you could break down your practice time:
7 minutes: WARM-UP - Long Tones/Lip Slurs/Scales and/or Rudiments/Exercise Sheets. Take time to listen to the quality of your sound and check the precision of your technique (fingerings, slide, sticking/stick grip). Use a tuner if you have one.
11 minutes: Play through your assigned lesson and concert material (solo, band music, lesson book, etc).  LISTEN and note the problem spots.  Use a metronome if you have one.
9 minutes: Practice the problem spots, looping 1-2 measures at a time until problems are fixed. For technical problems, play slowly until you can play the fingerings and rhythms accurately. For interpretive problems, LISTEN and evaluate the effectiveness of dynamics, phrasing, tempo, etc.  String the 2 measure chunks together until complete.
3 minutes: Play something you like to play! This can be something from your lesson book, a solo, or your band music. In addition, there are many excellent books with fun music that you could use to supplement your required materials.

In 8th Grade Band, there is a 60 minute practice requirement per week, and each report is worth 30 points.

WEEKLY GRADING SCALE
60 minutes = 30 points = A
45 - 59 minutes = 25 points = B
30 - 44 minutes = 22 points = C

Practice over 60 minutes or less than 30 minutes will earn 5 points for each 15 minutes of recorded time.  This is a great way to earn extra credit – just practice at least 15 minutes OVER the required time!

Practice reports are due on the first day of band each week.

PRACTICE TIPS:
1. HAVE SELF DISCIPLINE! Make practicing a part of your daily routine.
2. BE PREPARED! Have everything you need for a GOOD practice session with you in advance: instrument, music stand, music, cleaning and maintenance supplies, pencil, water bottle, metronome, etc.
3. SHARE your talent! Once in a while, invite your family to be your audience and play a song or two that you really like. Practice with other band members. You can help each other and practicing will be more fun.
4. ORGANIZE your time. Are you really busy? Try to split up your practice time. Try to practice 5-10 minutes before dinner and 5-10 minutes after dinner. Try to practice in the morning before school starts. Practice during lunch or after school/before sports practice in the band room (be sure to get the OK from Mrs. Cronin).
5. REMEMBER that you can't "cram" music improvement. It's much more productive to practice several times a week for short periods of time than it is to practice twice a week for an hour. Muscle memory and other skills will only develop through regular repetition.
