National Honor Society Application
Election to membership in the National Honor Society represents the highest honor and trust that can be bestowed upon a student in the junior or senior year of high school.  The National Honor Society recognizes students for outstanding SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP, and SERVICE.  Membership in the society is indicative that the student has attained and is demonstrating and promoting all of these qualities, and is exerting an effort to improve conditions in the school and community.  Meeting the grade point average requirement (3.5 weighted) is not the sole criteria for acceptance into the National Honor Society.  Schools that select members solely on the basis of scholarship are placing their charters in jeopardy for it violates the Constitution of the NHS.  Evidence that you meet the qualifications of the LEADERSHIP (demonstrated leadership or aspirations for leadership...in official or unofficial capacity), CHARACTER (no honor violations or restored from violation restrictions), and SERVICE (meeting the grade-level benchmarks for service hours) requirements are necessary to be eligible for membership.

Please read the following information regarding NHS membership and requirements before starting the application.

Membership
Selection for membership is by a faculty review of applicants and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service.  Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.  Members who resign or who are dismissed are no longer eligible for membership or its benefits and they may not reapply for membership.
Selection of Members
The NHS Sponsor will review all applications and vet students’ credentials (GPA, documented service hours, and disciplinary record) according to the requirements stated below. The Director or designee will be asked to review the list of potential members.
Scholarship Requirements for Application
To be eligible for membership the candidate must be a member of the junior or senior class. All applicants, whether junior or senior, must have a minimum cumulative non-rounded weighted grade point average (GPA) of 3.5.
Service Requirements for Application
A minimum of 105 verified community service hours are required of senior applicants, and a minimum of 70 verified community service hours are required for junior applicants. Students must also be willing to commit to earning 5 hours per year of service (10 total if inducted as a junior and 5 total if inducted as a senior) through NHS-sponsored programs over and above the requirements for MLWGS graduation.
Leadership and Character Requirements for Application
Students will be asked to detail their leadership experiences (official or unofficial) while attending Maggie Walker.  All applicants will be required to submit one essay, discussing either honor or service. Any honor code violations during enrollment at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School may impact or negate your application for membership. Additionally, please remember that any honor code violations once you are a member of NHS constitute grounds for dismissal.
