2025 Summer Spark!
Helpful Information: Workshops held at the Agricultural Resources Center, 1175 South Brady Ave, Newton, unless otherwise noted. Payment is needed to confirm your registration. Refunds are not made unless the workshop is cancelled due to weather or low registration.  4-H’ers may use scholarship money to pay for classes of their choice. Summer scholarships are available, email lortiz2@ncsu.edu for an application.  Payment must be made to confirm your spot in the classes.  

Class Descriptions:

Civic Spark Days: May 26-30/ 9am to 2pm/ Ages 11-18/ $30                                                                                What are different uses for land in a community? How does local government decide how to use land? Take a trip into the past at an archeological site, talk to a current county planner, and dream about future ways land can be used for the good of it’s citizens.

Mighty Pollinators: June 3-5/ 9 am to 12 pm/ Ages 9-18/ $10                                                                                  Get up close and personal with the miraculous world of pollinators! Suit up like a real beekeeper to get an in-depth look inside a honey bee hive. **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Jr Robotics Challenge: June 3-5/ 1-4pm/ Ages 8-11/ $10                                                                                         Are you a problem solver? Do you love LEGO? Come rise to the challenge using LEGO Spike Essential Robotic kits to design creative solutions to problems.**This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Afternoon Tea: June 6/ 1-3pm/ Ages 7-11/ $10                                                                                                        Come prepared and enjoy a proper afternoon tea, while learning about table manners of the bygone era. Dress in your favorite fancy attire.

Horticulture Hike: June 9/ 9am-12pm/ Ages 9-18/ Drop off and pick up at Riverbend Park/ $10
Join us for a hiking adventure, searching for plant and tree species and learning more about our local vegetation.

College Caravan: June 10-12, 8 am to 5 pm (approx.)/ Drop off and pick up to be determined/ 9th -11th graders/ $50                                                                                                                                                                 Finding the right college can be a challenge, but also exciting. Join Juntos 4-H for our summer College Caravan. We will learn more about the college selection process and tour a few schools while we are at it. **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Basic Ballet: June 11/ 10 am to 12 pm/ Ages 7-11/ $10                                                                                    Unleash your grace and elegance with basic ballet. Learn to stretch, leap and dance like a prima ballerina. ***This Class is Full.***

Race Car Driving @ Victory SIM: June 12/ 9am-12pm/Ages 12-18/ Drop off and Pick up at Victory SIM Experience/ $15                                                                                                                                                     Experience driving a race car on state of the art simulators, learn how simulators mimic real life, and bring out your competitive side with a mini-championship race. **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Electric Kit/ June 19/ 9am-11:30am/ Ages 11-18 / $10                                                                                                       Learn to solder capacitors, LED lights, timer and resistors on a PC board to create two complete LED flashers on one circuit board. Learn how you can earn a free NC 4-H Electric Congress fun-filled Trip sponsored by Duke Energy.  **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Dirt Diggers: June 19/ 1-4pm/ Ages 6-9/ $15                                                                                                          Would you like to learn about plants? Discover plants in the garden, propagate your own plant, and make a tasty treat using fresh produce. **Class is full.**

Scrapbooking 101: June 24/ 1-3pm/ Ages 9-18/ $10
Want to learn more about scrapbooking? At this workshop we’ll cover different types of scrapbooking before creating our own! **This class is ALMOST full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Sew Much Fun Beginner: June 24/ 9 am-12 pm/ Ages 8-18/ $30                                                                         Learn how to operate a sewing machine and the basics of sewing. 4-H'ers will work on a sewing project and be able to take it home. **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Sew Much Fun Advanced: June 25/ 9 am-12 pm/ Ages 11-18/ $30                                                                 Expand your knowledge of sewing. 4-H'ers will work on a sewing project and be able to take it home.        **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list        

Discover Drones: June 26-27/ 9am-12pm/ Ages 12-18/ $10                                                                                Guide a drone through an obstacle course by programming it’s path.

4-H Chopped: June 27/ 1pm-4pm/ Ages 9-12/ $20                                                                                                   Calling all aspiring chefs!! Come join us for a friendly cooking competition. Compete as teams in a 4-H version of “Chopped” with a mystery ingredient you will have to use in your dish. **This class is ALMOST full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Grandfather Mountain- June 30/ 8am to 4 pm/ 8-18/ $10 Bring/ Bag Lunch                                                         Learn about weather while enjoying the beauty of Grandfather Mountain and use tools that meteorologists use in the field to record the unique weather on the mountain. **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Mystery Morning & Afternoon Escape: July 3/ 9am-4pm/ Ages 11-18/ $35, Bag Lunch                                     Are you observant? Can you follow the clues? Then come discover who the culprit is as you listen to the Storyteller and talk amongst yourselves to solve the mystery of the Underground. **This class is ALMOST full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Cooking Crime Scene Investigation: July 2/ 9am-12pm/ Ages 8-14/ $10                                                                Do you like cooking? Do you want to know how investigators solve crimes? Then come decipher the clues and discover the culprit! **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Farm to Table: July 8-10/ 9am-4 pm/ Ages 9-18/ $65                                                                                             Begin the day with a visit to a nearby farm and/or farmers market and learn how things grow. Then return to the Extension office for kitchen time. 4-H'ers will learn how to turn farm produce into yummy new recipes.

Hands to Serve: July 14, July 17/ 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (subject to change)/ Ages 13-18/                                Join our summer community service initiative, visiting different places and contributing to the greater good.

Animal Science: July 15-July 16/ 9:30 am-4 pm/ Ages 10-18/ $50                                                                  Embark on a journey with us to discover the fascinating world of animals by visiting various farms and facilities. Through observations, interactions, and lessons, we will deepen our knowledge of animal science.

LEGO League Explore: Submerged: July 21-25/ 10am-12pm/ Ages 8-11/ $10                                                   Build and motorize a LEGO submarine while learning about our oceans. Explore the ocean zones and different marine animals that live in them. Present what you’ve learned built to your family on the last day. Parents and guardians are asked to return at 11:30am on Thursday for presentations. **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Riverbanks Zoo, Columbia, SC- July 29/ 8am to 4pm/ 8-18/ $25, Bag Lunch                                                    Learn about Wildlife Conservation as we go on a wild goose chase around the zoo. **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Art Exploration: July 31/ 10am-12pm/ Ages 11-18 / $40                                                                                       Learn the basics of paint pouring. Use paint pouring to create your own one of a kind masterpiece and learn different techniques and textures within your own art.

Mini Society: August 5-8/ 10am-3pm/ Ages 9-13/ $50                                                                                          Youth will create their own Mini-Society. You will have the chance to name your town, create a system for earning money, design your money, apply for jobs, and maybe even be mayor. Learn economic and business basics as you create a business and buy and sell with other Mini Society citizens (no outside selling allowed). The series ends with an auction and youth-only market designed by mini-society participants. **This class is full, you can place your child on the waiting list**

Adulting 101: August 12-13/ 10am-3pm/ Ages 11-18/ $30                                                                              Adulting is being able to handle life’s responsibilities. Learn basic skills such as financial literacy, dressing for success, meal planning, and more.
