How can interdisciplinary dialogues between art and law produce a generative dialogue to advance ways of thinking and being that better respects the more-than-human world? How can embodied ways of being, thinking, and creating amplify the movement to advance rights and legal protections for the more-than-human world? What should lawyers and artists understand about each other’s vocabularies to generate fruitful paradigms for developing systems for interspecies mutuality?

Canal Projects will host a conversation between Cesar Rodríguez-Garavito, founder of MOTH, and Jaqueline Gallant, lawyer at the NYU Law’s Earth Rights Advocacy (ERA), and Lithuanian artist and filmmaker Emilija Škarnulytė, on the occasion of the launch of the publication More than Human Rights. The volume discusses the philosophical, legal, and scientific foundations of the More than Human Rights framework as well as its implications for ideas and practices in fields such as law, human rights, ecology, politics, and storytelling.

The event provides an opportunity to see this type of interdisciplinary dialogue in practice and better understand how insights into humanity’s relationship with the more-than-human world deriving from the arts and the law can feed into each other.
