Furman Virtual Attendance Policy
Furman University currently states that they “do not guarantee remote access to academic courses and/or any other offerings during quarantine or isolation”. This means that a student who is in quarantine could potentially miss five consecutive classes with zero accommodation from professors. The lack of consideration for students’ physical and mental health can yield dangerous things for Furman as it fails to demonstrate compassion and rational judgment from the University.
1. Furman spent time and money ensuring virtual operation would run smoothly in previous covid semesters. Further, Furman required virtual operation for students/professors during the recent harsh weather conditions. This proves that it is possible and familiar to Furman staff, faculty, and students.
2. Covid aside, allowing students the chance to participate in class virtually, given a just reason for the absence, encourages students to participate if possible and supports their academic success. Whether it be surgery, a family emergency, mental health, etc., virtual attendance can redefine the approach to aiding students when unable to physically attend.
3. On top of virtual options in emergency situations being extremely beneficial to all reasons of absence and to all students, it proves to be essential during the current covid pandemic. Students being high risk, worried about covid, having symptoms, in quarantine, or waiting for a result are all examples of reasons why an absence related to covid might occur. If students are forced to pick between staying on top of class work/material and their own/others safety, students might feel pressured to show up to class even if it could be dangerous. If Furman wishes to stay open, as well as follow through with their goals to prioritize student’s wellbeing, it is clear that their policy must change.
