California Healthcare Interpreting Association 2026 Presentation Proposal
CHIA invites you to submit a presentation proposal for our 26th Annual Educational Conference on March 6-7, 2026 at the Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco, CA: "Shifting Sands, Steady Voices." Together, we face shifting sands with grounded expertise and a shared commitment to language justice.

Amid policies shifting beneath our feet and the ongoing rise of artificial intelligence, our language access champions stand as steady voices in the storm—anchored in clarity, ethics, and human connection. This year’s conference is inspired by the call to evolve, advocate, and lead as vital bridges in increasingly complex environments.

The selection committee follows specific, neutral, and non-discriminatory guidelines. The following are some topic areas to consider although not exhaustive:
  • Research and findings in interpreting and language access
  • Legal and policy changes affecting language access: mandates, rights, and advocacy for LEP populations
  • Interpreter roles in advocacy and policy outreach
  • Interpreting for minority and under-resourced languages (including languages of lesser diffusion)
  • Communication access for people with disabilities
  • Culturally and linguistically appropriate healthcare services
  • Technology and AI in interpreting: workflows, ethics, and human-AI collaboration
  • Applications of technology in language services
  • Interpreting in crisis, emergency, or high-stakes settings
  • Interpreting in specific medical specialties (subject specialists encouraged)
  • Skills for different interpreting modalities and settings
  • Language-specific sessions
  • Work benefits and challenges for contract interpreters, freelancers, staff interpreters, and bilingual employees
  • Business and practice management skills
  • Inclusive training, mentorship, and train-the-trainer approaches
  • Leadership development for interpreters
  • Interpreter professional identity and growth
  • Building personal and collective resilience
  • Interpreter health and wellness
CHIA submits and pays for the conference's CEU applications (CCHI, NBCMI, RID, and ATA). We would like to encourage presenters to consider submitting performance-based CEU eligible proposals for the breakout or workshop sessions.

You may submit ONE OR MORE proposals for any (and each) of the following:

1. Workshop (2 hours):

We have limited space for workshops. Proposals must detail INTERACTIVE skill-building. Presentations must be eligible for CCHI performance-based CEUs (https://ceapcchi.org/Home/Guidelines). Please be sure to answer all the questions listed in this form to enable your session to qualify for performance-based CEUs.

2. Breakout Session (1 hour):

They generally take place Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. Must be eligible for CEUs. Breakout Sessions may also be interactive and eligible for CCHI performance-based CEUs (https://ceapcchi.org/Home/Guidelines) Please be sure to answer all the questions listed in this form to enable your session to qualify for performance-based CEUs.

3. Poster Presentation (1 hour):

Posters provide presenters an opportunity to share their research, special project or program successes to attendees through casual Q&A conversations. The CEU session takes place on Friday (presenter attendance required). Posters will be displayed all day on Saturday (attendance by presenter is not required).

Designing an effective poster requires careful thought and advance preparation. It is not sufficient to enlarge an abstract and add a few figures. When planning a poster, the first task is to identify the one, two, or three principal messages you have to convey. Then work out the most effective presentation and choose a headline to help highlight each point.

Poster presentations should be designed to summarize current research or programs in graphic forms: charts, tables, graphs, pictures, etc. Your poster should be self-explanatory so that you are free to supplement and discuss particular points raised in inquiry. Detailed information can be provided with handouts. Applicants may find this video helpful: Giving an Effective Poster Presentation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMSaFUrk-FA
