The overall goal of the Share the Road Campaign is to improve road sharing and avoid fatal and serious collisions between cyclists and heavy vehicles? The purpose of this survey is to identify the most effective behavioural strategies to increase awareness and empathy between heavy vehicle drivers and people who ride bicycles.
We all tend to get on with people like us. For example if we use a bicycle for transport, or drive a truck for work we are likely to have a lot in common with those who do the same. We are likely to support the same things as those in “our group”. On the other hand, with road space being in short supply there is competition between users, particularly drivers of large vehicles and people riding bicycles, as there often is not enough rough room for safe separation. In this example the interests of drivers are different to those of bicycle riders. This can lead to attitudes that work against the “other group”, or “out group”.
A mutual understanding of safety and empathy between bicycle riders and heavy vehicle drivers will improve safety. Your responses will help us designing programs and interventions that foster mutual respect and understanding between these groups.
