Alcoholism and Pregnancy Lunch Lecture
Alcohol is used by approximately 15% of pregnant women, with rates as high as 20% in recent decades. Why has the prevalence of alcohol use during pregnancy remained so high despite alcohol being established as a teratogen? The Adam Society is pleased to host Kathleen Mitchell, International Spokesperson and mother with personal experience with FASD. She will discuss a mother’s decision to drink alcohol while pregnant and the impacts of alcohol on the neurobiological development of the fetus. With increased dialogue and earlier identification of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), we as medical professionals can mitigate the child’s disability and address the parents’ potential substance use disorders. Event scheduled for September 19th from 1200-100pm in room 3-101 of MMEC. Food will be served! This event is open to all VCU students. Contact adamsociety1@gmail.com with any questions.
