We are excited to have past summer camp participants join us at Camp Assistants! We will be hiring 4 - 6 Camp Assistants this summer. Deadline to apply is Monday, April 17, midnight.

If you have previously participated in 2+ YWiC or CS Adventure summer intensives, we want you to explore your Camp Assistant skills and join us to help with camp management!

Purpose of the position: Assist Lead Instructors, camp staff, and Camp Directors during the 6 weeks of summer camp and activities offered by the Department of Computer Science. Including field trips, food and snack preparation, material preparation, set up and clean up activities, and general camper support.

Camp Assistant Selection Criteria: A camp assistant should be highly responsible and flexible, as well as a role model to campers. Camp assistants must be empathetic and mature enough to handle emotional challenges. Experience as a camp leader, counselor, assistant in any environment is preferred, as well as a positive disposition that encourages learning.

Responsibilities and Duties
• Be familiar with camp schedule and activities
• Supervise students throughout daily activities, including classes, free-time activities and meals
• Assist in preparation of activity materials for campers when needed, ensure activities start on-time
• Provide a safe environment by monitoring campers and ensure they are where they need to be
• Act as a good role model for girls, including warm, positive outlook and attitude
• Assist teachers during class time with projects and materials
• Communicate with other camp staff regularly and monitor challenges as they occur
• Provide opportunities for all girls to be involved in the camp activities and interact with group
• Assist other camp staff with any activity needs as they arise

Qualifications
• Ability to work as a team member and be proactive
• Enjoy working with 10 - 18 year olds, preferably with experience in similar setting
• Has commitment to Computer Science and STEM education
• Taken courses in Computer Science and STEM fields preferred
• Warm, approachable, empathetic personality

Commitment Expected
• Arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to the start of camp each morning and depart no earlier than 30 minutes after the conclusion of camp activities each day. Start times will change pending type and start time of each camp.

Training
• Become familiar with SNAP! Programming, Arduino activities, NXT Robotics (the new EV3 version), and AppInventor, for middle school camp support.
• Become familiar with Python, HTML, and Javascript, for high school camp support.
• The Camp Directors and Lead Instructors will provide additional training and materials.
• Attend 2 - 3 mandatory training sessions held in April and May.

NMSU is a nationally ranked Carnegie Foundation research institution with top performing programs and services. We strive for excellence in all areas of teaching and learning, and work to identify best practices for continued success. All participants will engage in this process via pre- and post-assessments, entry and exit interviews, daily surveys, and other data gathering methods.

The YWiC HS Alum will come in from 10-1230 for one, two, or three weeks, and build. They get to design, create, build, code, develop - to their hearts content. We will not be teaching them any new code or information from 10 am - 12:30 p. They will have access to available materials, computers, building components, robotic kits, instructors, classrooms, labs, and faculty members. Our team will walk with the young women as they take the lead and turn their ideas into completed projects!

This is an intense summer camp schedule being held in Las Cruces on the NMSU Campus in Science Hall. You will be challenged, pushed, and asked to lead and follow. You will be paid stipends for your work at $8.00 - $9.00 per hour, based on experience, for up to 30 hours of work per week. You will be asked to submit a paper timesheet every 2 weeks. *
